Sean Williams = awesome, so I'm pleased with that.
I'm also wondering how this will tie in with all previous continuity; I'd say we're in for an interesting ride.

The Official Site has First Look-ed the upcoming tie-in novel, The Force Unleashed, to the game of the same name.

Well, I'm not in love with the cover as is - but since they're saying it's not final I'll reserve judgement (though how much do you want to bet it doesn't change much).
I had written some stuff in Acky's post in the "general" forum about this book (his topic was mostly about the game) but it never got commented on, so I'll just repeat it here... I figured "rock the continuity" referred to the very existance of a secret apprentice to Vader. But, I suppose if they still intend to name the apprentice, the choice of character might change our perception of a character. For instance (and totally randomly) what if we discovered Han Solo was Vader's secret apprentice? What if he was tasked by Vader to infiltrate the rebellion - what if his "torture" in ESB was all staged? What if he's STILL a Sith apprentice to this day in LotF? (as Nom has repeated pointed out - Solo's "luck" seems almost as if he has some minor jedi talent - maybe it's more than that). Or what if Vader's apprentice was Wedge? He actually would have been fulfilling his Sithly duty in destroying the Death Star 2 - ending his master's life. Just some quick thoughts on how revealing the name of the secret apprentice could "rock the continuity". I'm not sure how I feel about the game - but I'll definately read the novel. Some of the concept art at the website is awesome - I'd love to see them use the Star Destroyer crashing art as the novel cover. While I can understand the negative feelings (the truth is, the game likely won't concern itself with established EU continuity - the videogames rarely do) - I see this as an opportunity for the EU literature side of things - taking an event like this and working this new character into existing stories. What if this "secret apprentice" lives through the movies and is one of Lumiya's Sith in LotF? What if this secret apprentice was responsible for recalling Thrawn in the original Thrawn trilogy? The possibilities are there to be taken advantage of. ****************************************************************

It could make things very interesting if this secret apprentice is someone that we either already know or someone that is still around somewhere. If this secret apprentice has been around tho what has he or she done for all this time?

That makes too much sense, so I consider it pretty certain that this apprentice will not be connected to the Legacy Sith. It is the LFL way...

Re: First Look This: The Force Unleashed Novel | #5

But I think that's the beauty of this - because it originated as a game (where I'm sure the plot writer for the game just thought this was a "cool" idea and didn't care about fitting it into continuity) the Literature folks now have a chance to make this retcon into something that DOES make sense. Like connecting it to the Legacy Era Sith (either Lumiya's or Krayt's if they're not already part of the same group).
So I just saw on gamespot.com that the release date for the game has been delayed. Originally due out in Nov of 2007, it's been pushed back to 2Q 2008. I'm wondering if that's going to have an effect on the release date of the book. I think this was supposed to be the Jan/Feb Hardcover - but that was when it was coming out AFTER the game. I'm not sure the game making division is going to be in love with the idea of the book giving away the plot of the game before the game has even come out yet. You can read more here (and see the cool art that I'd choose for the book cover as well): www.gamespot.com/news/6167058.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;2 ****************************************************************

And to get a feel for some of the plot/characters, an interview with one of the game designers is here:

Quote: Uhm, no. The Jan/Feb hardcover was and still is Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. The Force Unleashed book was due out this fall, alongside the game, but it's under a seperate contract that has no effect on the rest of the publishing schedule. There's a time when a man needs to fight and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny is lost, the ship has sailed, and that only a fool would continue. Truth is, I have always been a fool. |

Ah yes, that's right. Thanks for the reminder.
Still begs the question of when this book will actually come out though. ****************************************************************

But in regards to this whole "rocking the continuity" bit, has it ever been confirmed that it's the identity of the secret apprentice that is going to be doing the "rocking," so to speak?
Who's to say that the "rocking continuity" has anything to do with the secret apprentice? Why can't it be related to some other facet of the game/book? |

From what little we know of the story: do you think it warrants a hardcover release?
and will you be buying the hardback, or waiting for the softback reprint? I bent my wookiee. |

I'll do what I normally do: hope a library close by gets it, and if they don't and the buzz is good, wait for paperback to buy it.

I'll be buying the HC; but only because
a) I prefer HCs to PBs. and b) If I waited for the paperback here, I'd be waiting for quite a long while... |

I'm torn over this one. I'm interested, but I just don't know if I'm interested enough to pay even a discounted hardcover price.

I see where you're coming from. For the book at least, we have very little info on actually what is going to transpire in it. Perhaps as the release date approaches and they dole out some more... substantial info on the plot, then you can be more informed. |

The game itself just seems to be "cause as much carnage as you can with a multitude of Force powers and weapons," I'm not sure how good a book might be. I'm definitely not going to buy it before I read it/reactions through.

From the game website, (www.theforceunleashed.com)
Quote: and from the character bios: Quote: APPRENTICE! dear lord, I've transcribed it so many times in just one paragraph that the word now looks funny... I'm think I'm pretty much sold. Now that i think about it, it is pretty interesting that Vader had an apprentice. But they better give the guy a name or else I'm gonna throw the book away. I'm already sick of the word "appentice"... So now let's speculate. Considering that Vader wasn't a fully trained Sith by the end of Episode III, and that he's taken years to train this apprentice... I still have no clue when the hell this takes place, but my best guess is at most 15 years BBY to at least 5 years BBY. I bent my wookiee. |

Re: First Look This: The Force Unleashed Novel | #17

I've heard that Del Rey is not allowed to publish anything on the Dark Times after the first year after Episode 3 (so after 18BBY) and nothing before the final year or so before ANH (so, 2ABY to 1ABY).**
Obviously they can get around this by doing stories that aren't all that involved with the formation of the Empire/Order 66/fugitive Jedi/Sidious, Vader and the Empire at its height (such as the Crispin's Han Solo trilogy, for example), but I do wonder if this impacts on when Force Unleashed is set. Note that Coruscant Nights is set within that first year after ROTS. **So they don't inadvertantly step on the toes of the developing TV series. However, I'm not sure if this is fact or just rumour. |

Sounds like the storyline has some G-level support, if you can take this at face value:
Quote: So I'm not sure if the Dark Times embargo applies. If it did, we'd have to assume then that it'd take place in 1 BBY. I bent my wookiee. |

Quote: Eh I don't see how this can be true when they are publishing a book about the Death Star which would be taking place in between those two time periods if I'm not mistaken. And it's already been stated in the past that some aspects of Force Unleashed will take place over a long period of time and possibly beyond the Battle of Yavin. |

Actually, Death Star is taking place in a relatively short time period, just before and during A New Hope.
As I said, I'm not sure if my above comment is fact or merely rumour and as you've pointed out, TFU has Flannelled One-level involvement, so any and all "rules" are out the window, as George can do whatever the hell George wants (and as long as I can play the game and throw stormtroopers all about the place like a leaf in the wind, then I don't care!). |
