Posts: 10578 Jun 15 11 11:28 AM	Remove this ad I know its only Abeloth trying to fool the crims on the space station, but when they said that she (Abeloth) said Vestara was a Jedi, I died a little on the inside. I died some more when Ben made a joke about it. I kind of actually hope Mara is rolling in her grave, because I highly suspect the Skywalkers will take one final trip to theh Lake of Apparitions in Apocalypse, and I want Mara to verbally smackdown Ben. By the ending of this book, Vestara is all but baptized as a Jedi. Tahiri kicked ALL THEIR ASSES in prison. I lol'ed. And fist-pumped the air. And then I basked in her badassery. Are you saying she is Yulaw? RAYNAR AND KYP SCENE FOR THE WIN. Two characters that really do need and deserve more screentime. I appreciate FOTJ's continued Raynar presence, even if it is just one scene per novel. Yes, I want more, but I'll take what I can get. What did you think of the paragraph talking about Raynar was all experienced as a Jedi and such during that scene? Wyn Dorvan winning the All-Star Sabacc tournament. I lol'ed. Was there any other sensible alternative? Lando and Han were off being daddies. Seha Dorvald as Jedi Knight. YAY. Now, please don't unceremoniously kill her off and/or severely decrease her screentime. We NEED to keep building the cast, not cutting it down. Yes, but I would have liked to see some of the details in how she became such an allegedly badass Knight overnight. Nam Chorios. Excellence. And I love that the NR and GA are taking this shavit seriously and have a series of Golan Defense Platforms stationed there. I really want this book to give Nam Chorios and Planet of Twilight legitimacy for other readers as I wish people appreciated them more. I hope this book does that. I really want it to. I need to reread Planet of Twilight, but honestly this didn't do much for the link between them to me. Especially when the main ally chick forgets she knew Luke and they finally explain what the Therans listen to; if PoT ever explained that, I missed it. Back up to Tahiri. I head-desked when she gets into a fight with that Hutt and breaks his arm. Hutts don't have fricken skeletons, so I really can't comprehend how she breaks his arm. Hutts are like jelly, you literally CAN'T break jelly. You can chop it up or squash it or eat it, but you can't break it. They're very strong, so I imagine they have some skeletal structure. You'd probably have to be Lowbacca to actually break it, though. Allston isn't trying to make Daala seem like a likable, personable, sane, decent strategist or politician. HE HAS SEEN THE LIGHT. I am thankful that at long last people are not pretending Daala is Gilad Pellaeon-lite. She's back to her KJA personality, baby, yeah! I noticed this. I believe they also actually made references to her past for the first time in 9 books. *Did you see what Tahiri did there (Hutt anatomy notwithstanding)? It was pretty awesome. I'm sorry, I was having so much trouble actually finding her in this novel, that I didn't. It was like trying to find a Kowakian monkey-lizard in the folds of a Hutt that had sat on it. Sure, he's been assimilated by the ~~Borg~~... ~~poor man's Borg~~ Killiks for a number of years, but we have to recall he was experienced BEFORE that. He went on Jedi missions. He defeated bad guys. He saved lives. He studied the Force and graduated as a Knight. We also have to remember his actions at the Crash. He saved Lomi and Welk even after all they did and all they cost him. Other characters - including Luke and Jacen - point out that this is pretty much the Epitome of Jedi Knighthood, and we also see a couple of other characters (Mara and Jaina) commenting how they would've let the bad guys burn. So while Raynar has indeed been out of commission for a while, he doesn't automatically lose all that experience. It's like when a general or admiral or something (imagine Wedge Antilles) retires like half a dozen times, but is then recommissioned or returns to the service. They still have that experience. Its doesn't vanish into the ether. So no, I had no problem with it. I thought it was a fantastic bit of recall. Me, biased? Yes. But its still the truth. Um... where is Jaina? Oh yeah, she had one line in a senior Jedi meeting. Whaaaat. The. Kriiiiiiiff? Senator Treen, Moff Lecersen and co. I lol'ed. Between Backlash and this, they are into some hardcore LARPing and RPGing. It makes their ultra-sinister conspiracy all the more creepy and weird (in a great way.) Moff Lecersen on the comm: "Oh hey guys, we need the next round of our clandestine conspiracy to end galactic civilisation as we know it. ...LARP time?" Those guys are WHACK! TASELDA FOR THE WIN. Apparently, she has disembarked from the Crazy Train, destination Saneville. I love Allston, because this time, he didn't forget to actually have Luke and Ben visit the Location of the Week's main character, like.... Backlash* (I am still smarting no one even mentioned Augwynne Djo!). I actually quite liked Taselda, and it is good to see a more sane side of her this time around, while still keeping in character with her personality. THERAN LISTENERS. Being awesome. Its great to see a Force group that don't a) rip into the Jedi for everything they do (even if they have valid points) b) being evil c) using the Force for either exclusively attack, defense or to be superpowered X-Men. To use it mostly for healing or spirit soothing is something unique, and I think something we need to see more of. I am utterly convinced that Jacen learned their vein routing technique. Technically speaking, I think the authors will retcon their asses of by using this to explain why Jacen goes the entirety of LOTF without referencing or even thinking of the Dark Man given how apocalyptic and universe-altering Jacen seems to think he is/was as retconned by FOTJ. I smell a retcon coming, whereby Jacen used the Vein Routing on himself (or got the Listeners to do it for him) and they ripped out all the memories he had of the coming Dark Man and only left the strange sense of a coming apocalypse in his brain. Retcons..... I smell one on the way. On that note, points deducted for Allston NOT REFERENCING Jacen's travels at all. Its sad when the only reference to Jacen of any note is when Boring Borleias military personnel under his command are sent there for beign twerps. Jacen Solo: The Sith Tassles of FOTJ. So interesting.... but they are the thinnest MacGuffin. FORCE STORMS ON NAM CHORIOS. Always awesome. Always worth the CAPS-LOCK. Drochs. Eating people. Mmmm.... Geffling. Admiral Parova: LARP-ing Nek Bwua'tu. Even the other conspirators think this is below the belt. Another passenger on TEH CRAZY TRAIN. Seriously. Where are the Admiral Ackbars and Garm Bel Iblises and Wedge Antilleses in the military in the Legacy Era? Did they all run away to saner pastures with the Triebakks and Releqy A'Klas and other sane politicians? Javlon Thewles. Can I.... 'ship him and Seha yet? I need to make up for the lack of Seha/Ben with Vestara's introduction to proceedings. *KAM SOLUSAR IS IN THIS BOOK. HE HAS LINES. LINES OF DIALOGUE. HE INTERACTS. WITH OTHER CHARACTERS. Oh I'm sorry. Didn't mean to shout.

Maybe it was just the way they phrased it, but in my eyes, he's effectively a brand new Knight (not a brand new Jedi) because his last actions as a Jedi were the ones he was Knighted for. And the POV referred to the way the comment he received was normally directed toward newly Knighted Jedi- that's what my remark was about. Um... where is Jaina? Oh yeah, she had one line in a senior Jedi meeting. Whaaaat. The. Kriiiiiiiff? The Council + all Solos Might As Well Promote Them Now meeting? Senator Treen, Moff Lecersen and co. I lol'ed. Retcons..... I smell one on the way. I like this idea. It also gave me the impression that that was how he learned all of his mind-raping techniques he uses so indiscriminantly in DNT & LOTF. I can't recall if those mind-rub/mind-blocking techniques were ever explained as having come from a certain group in particular, but this seems like the most efficient way to wipe a memory.... especially that of a powerful Force-user. Or, as I called him by default when I read Planet of Twilight, Snapplesauce. I can't believe (in a good way) that Allston revisited him! While being awesome, it does highlight how off his game I perceive him to have been in Backlash. But still no Jacen mentions. WHATEVER. Enjoying the Theran Listener meeting. Their local leader -though I will have to check for his name... I forgot - seems like an interesting fellow. SHIP! I love that he has no proper name. Everyone just rolls with "Ship." I really wonder if they are going to do anything substantially lasting with him... maybe he ends up becoming Ben's personal ship.... er.... vessel.... you know what I mean. Jaina and Jag scene! But wait.... they're kinda retreading ground they've already walked. So each of them has to keep secrets (Jedi or Imperial) but now they have actually agreed that they will have to do this and they'll just have to compartmentalise this in the bigger picture of their relationship. OMG just wake me up in time for the wedding ceremony plz. Jaina and Jag should be way more dynamic than this, both as individual characters and as a couple. WHAT. HAPPENED? And from Allston, the man who should be writing the heck out of them? Hhhmmm. Daala, back in (JAT) style. Now all they have to do is kill her off. Seha went on a date. Just curious...Which book contained the Luke/Jacen interaction about Akanah? As for doing anything substantially with Ship, I think he's a key to this mystery being solved. The fact that Ship led the LTOS off world and "found" Abeloth, and that Lumiya foresaw that Ship would be integral to Jacen's destiny...I think more will be revealed.

Another cool character is taken down. Jaina gets her Action Girl on! LOL at Corran almost getting caught in the turbolift. Its all ACTION ACTION ACTION. Um.... quickest coup ever? I'm just putting it out there. LOL at how the Jedi Coup overtakes the Treen/Lecersen coup. This is what we in the business call a Coup Clash. When you have many coups all at once, it leads to Coup Confusion. THE SENATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doing something at least moderately important since like Star By Star* (not including that time Jacen curbstomped them with a protocol droid). LOL though at how they specifically mention the Senate ISN'T doing anything so Daala has to do all the work and thus gets the blame from the populace for when things go wrong. Everyone getting confused because of the Coup Clash! I lol'ed. Kam and Tionne participating in the coup. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing. Valin and Jysella are still on Coruscant? Geez guys, get your skates on! New reporter! I wonder if she will go the way of the awesome Maadhi. ACTION JAINA! Hapan ambassador: "I did not soil myself." Wait... who's looking after Allana? Bazel? Winter? Lowie? Oh who cares, there's a Coup Clash on! Daala... taken out like a punk! I approve!

Posts: 13966 Jun 18 11 10:25 PM	This one's for Fate of the Jedi: Conviction, which in my humble opinion ties Allies for the best FOTJ title thus far (though I know people's mileage may vary). It pretty much continued every (medium and major) storyline so far introduced in FOTJ with the lone exception of Master Barratk'l's anti-slavery Jedi team, and what's more it progressed all of these storylines. Great characterisation of Ben, Leia, Allana, Tahiri, and holy hell yes, Daala. A somewhat more in depth exploration of the Local Force Group of the Week in the Theran Listeners, much better than the all-too breezy driveby of the Fallanassi. And what's this? Some storylines have even CONCLUDED. A fantastic full circle farewell to Callista, who finally found the Light and was finally released from Abeloth's thrall and on her final journey to the undiscovered country. I really appreciated the way her story ended, on Nam Chorios and that it was Luke and Luke alone that freed her. The end of Daala as CoS. I did wonder where she was determined to head off to in her cliffhanger ending. I was stumped trying to think of a decent location. The only thing I could come up with is that she's headed off to wherever it is that her son lives. After they told us Daala had a son and granddaughter in LOTF Revelation, I've actually been curious to find out what he's like. The only other alternative I came up with is some sort of destination where there are people that are/were loyal to Pellaeon. But even then, most Imperials hate her, so that may not work. Kinda wishing Tahiri had've a) not chanelled Michael Scofield and actually remained in prison. Wouldn't that have actually HELPED her get an appeal to her conviction? OR alternatively, she could've brought Daala back in to custody and won more favours that way. The very LEAST Tahiri could've done is knocked Firecrotch off that speeder-gurney. However, I will roll with this on account of how that final scene with Tahiri panned out: waiting for the Solos and taking her future by the bantha balls.... even if in my heart of hearts I still think she should've stayed in prison. Allston has promised us a redemptive story for Tahiri and we know she'll be in Wraith Squadron 2012.... so I am anticipating what he has in store for her. Luke's sentence is overturned. I know there are many storyline reasonings for this and yes, this is another storyline conclusion, but I do wonder... have they freed Luke up so can attend a certain family event? Something old, something new, something borrowed... that kind of family event (and no, I am NOT talking about a wedding between his son and Mara 2.0). Really enjoyed the storyline with the Solos (sans Jaina) in this book. Authors have finally come to understand that characters can travel to more than one location in their novels. And holy hannah montanna, I really appreciated Leia and Allana's relationship in this one. Qerdan Dei was also one of the more intriguing Lost Sith we've seen in the entire series and the only reason I am not as upset by his death as I should be is because Leia got to take a level in badass and also have his POV as he is decapitated is OMGAwesome. I also appreciated the way Tenel Ka was worked in to this story and although it was only a couple of scenes it is great to see her after half a dozen novels' worth of absence. Now that Treen and her conspirators are co-Chiefs of State, their next target will be Jag. I'm actually wondering if this is maybe why Jaina and Jag had so little to do here. Perhaps Allston was giving them a breather? Before whatever drama occurs next? On a minor note, I was really impressed that Allston included a droids' rights movement as part of the overarching slavery plotline. Its something hat is touched on lightly every now and again but is really begging for much more screentime. So I appreciated that touch. Enjoyed getting a look at the Circle of Lords in the Ascension excerpt. Abeloth's comments to Gavar suggest to me that in regards to Kesh, Abeloth is gearing up for a Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies type scenario. She'll masscre them all, but eat their souls first to get a power boost. A fantastic entry in FOTJ and one that covered almost all the bases.

She might as well have sat in prison with no trial and then escaped. In other words, it's an announcement that half of the last book, and the cover to this one, were filler. Jag and Jaina: Absolutely nothing. They could have been completely absent from this book for all the good it did. Tyria Sarkin had more of a role than her. Ben and Vestara: Nothing changed from Vortex other than more of the worst possible direction of it being obvious Vestara wants to be a Jedi and will end up Ben's teenage bride. Outcast plot device things: Still not explained Lost Tribe invasion plans: same situation as Omen. I don't think I missed anything there. A Long Time Ago Wishlist

He can get reinforcements from the Jedi without having to do so in clandestine and arguably illegal means. He can now openly talk with the Jedi without breaking the terms of his exile. He has dealt another blow to Abeloth, which leads to... Abeloth: No change in situation from Vortex other than a comm call. Yes, Callista was killed (for a second time this series) and Abeloth was hurt (for a second time) but story-wise adding on slightly more of something does not a difference make. The last of the Shelter Jedi - the Horns - have been freed from Abeloth's influence, leaving no Jedi (that we know of) still under her thrall. You might not like, I might not like it, it may not be the direction we want it to go, but it is still progression in the sense of this plotline being different than it was at the start. The trial ended, Tahiri was found guilty of murder and treason. She went to prison. She then escaped prison and went on the lam. Jag and Jaina: Absolutely nothing. They could have been completely absent from this book for all the good it did. Tyria Sarkin had more of a role than her. If nothing else, they agreed that they have to keep their respective secrets from each other, but they're going to compartmentalise this issue of their relationship so it doesn't interfere with anything else. Lost Tribe invasion plans: same situation as Omen. Except now they have Abeloth. Furthermore, they are actively seeking to kill off the Jedi Queen, and in the absence of that, kill off Tenel Ka since Taalon's report has given the Lost Sith intel that she and the Jedi Queen physically look similar. If Qerden Dei can figure out that Tenel Ka and Allana are related from his mission on Klatooine, then it stands to reason that other Lost Sith assigned to this project can figure it out also.

Which they agreed to in whichever book the rings reappeared in, just not in a comic relief scene. They were Celestial (probably) monitoring equipment. Monitoring the Maw/Abeloth's prison. This was explained in Outcast? In Outcast all we knew was that there were floating balls of light telling them... what was it, what to blow up? Or something like that. I'm hazy on the details but we never got anything other than questions that I saw. Except now they have Abeloth Which they did in Vortex. Furthermore, they are actively seeking to kill off the Jedi Queen, and in the absence of that, kill off Tenel Ka since Taalon's report has given the Lost Sith intel that she and the Jedi Queen physically look similar. I think this was just an extension of Vortex also. I'll admit that the one subplot with the Sith and Allana and everything may be something new, but it's a one-off and will have no impact on the plot later on. If Qerden Dei can figure out that Tenel Ka and Allana are related from his mission on Klatooine, then it stands to reason that other Lost Sith assigned to this project can figure it out also. Possibly. All this really did for me was scream "If the Sith can figure it out at a glance, why can't people who've been following these celebrities' every move figured it out yet?!" Posts: 1086 Jun 19 11 9:46 PM	Remove this ad Yeah I've always found that Allston is the master of making his novels seem like they are advancing a certain plot (or in this case, multiple plots) when in reality it's more of a "sideways" move rather than forward. Vestara's journal entries are a great example of this. Nothing actually happens between her and her father, but in both of their minds something sort of does. With the exception of maybe Betrayal, all of his books are exactly like this.
