I mean, if your curious about an artist you've never heard before, you're going to want to pick the right album for first listen. Online will only help you so far, IMO. So, I'm thinking about buying an Iron Maiden album. Anyone know which one I should start with first? Same with Van Halen. NOM'S AN EMU, DAMMIT!!!

Posts: 713 Nov 1 09 5:08 PM	Boba, I have to disagree with you. Best of Both Worlds might be the best Van Halen album in the Sammy Hagar era, but I would suggest Van Halen I or Van Halen II. Both albums are amazing. Raw rock and roll at it's finest. I would shoplift for a klondike bar

Siren Song Of The Counter Culture by Rise Against is also good. It's not as...disconnnected as their first two albums and it's rawer than their last two. Perfect. Though I don't have a whole lot of exposure to it, both of Saosin's albums seem metal-y enough for your needs. Half of Blink-182's songs are emotional ragers. Try Enema Of The State or Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. Individual songs: "Swing," "MakeDamnSure," "What's It Feel Like To Be A Ghost," "Cut Me Up Jenny,"-Taking Back Sunday "Fer Sure,"-The Medic Droid tu.ne.cede.malis.sed.contra.audientior.ito "BRB Klingons," -Acky12 "Thiz one is perhapz too ferocious for a documentary children will watch." -Saba Sebatyne

(drums), and the great John Paul Jones (OMFG YES!!!) (Bass, keyboards). I just want to hear people's opinions on the album before I rush out and get it. This weekend. Probably. I think I'm expecting too much from them, just like every other supergroup that comes around. I'll probably pick up the album this weekend as well. Posts: 713 Dec 3 09 5:53 PM	Led Zeppelin's entire discography is great. They don't have a single song that I don't like. Probably start with either II or IV, but I really don't think you can go wrong. I like all of the early stuff by The Who. After Keith Moon died, the band wasn't quite as strong. I think Who's Next is probably a great starting point. Everything Hendrix ever touched is gold. Are You Experienced? is my personal favorite. Black Sabbath. Anything up until Ozzy left is great. Sticky Fingers is probably a good starting point for The Rolling Stones. Wheels of Fire by Cream is pretty solid. Either Highway to Hell or Back in Black by AC/DC. Queen is pretty essential. It's hard to recommend just one album. Even their Greatest Hits doesn't have all of their hits on it, and that is 3 discs. A Night at the Opera should suffice for starters. I like Aerosmith's early stuff, Rocks and Toys in the Attic are both pretty solid. Rush is more progressive, but I like just about everything they've put out. 2112 is a good one. A lot of people will recommend 1984 as the best Van Halen disc, but I think VHI and VHII are both better. Those are probably good for starters. You've also got a lot of bands that I would recommend like Pink Floyd, The Doors, Boston, ZZ Top, The Kinks, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Police... This is really just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many great classic rock bands out there, that it is hard to think of some. I would shoplift for a klondike bar

Posts: 3661 Dec 3 09 8:11 PM	DJ, I could go on this topic for awhile. So... Led Zeppelin: I don't have all of them. just IV and Physical Graffiti (and Mothership). IV is probably their best work, but PG has good stuff on it (though more expensive, due to being a double album). If you really aren't sure, get Mothership. It's basically the closest thing to a "greatest hits" for LZ that you'll get. Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon. Get that one first. no questions here. My personal favorite (of the four I have. I didn't get into classic rock until last summer), is Wish You Were Here. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (which is on that album) is PF's answer to LZ's Stairway To Heaven, IMO. PF has 4 albums that everyone knows about (Dark Side, Wish, Animals, and The Wall), so I would suggest getting those 4 first. They also have a greatest hits called Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd. Rush: Moving Pictures has their best known song (Tom Sawyer on it) and is quite good. 2112 is also quite good. Their greatest hits is called The Spirit of Radio, but it only covers up to Hold Your Fire (I think). Only 3 albums by them I have. Also one of the few classic rock bands still playing to this day. And the same people. Might I mention it's only 3 people in that band. The Who: Who's Next. Keep in mind that the songs after Won't Get Fooled Again are new additions to it. Queen: Not really sure. I'll go with Obi and say A Night At The Opera. AC/DC: I'd go with Back In Black first, then Highway To Hell. Black Sabbath: Okay, something to keep in mind. The Ozzy albums have yet to be digitally remastered (or at least, digitally remastered and then become widely available at stores) so if you listen to Ozzy era songs on YT, you'll notice the difference btwn YT and the actual CD. I recommend Paranoid, an album all metal and Classic Rock fans should have. The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's and The White Album. Other bands I recommend (I'm still a newbie) are Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Hendrix, Van Halen, Aerosmith, and the bands Obi has recommended. Funny thing is, Classic Rock isn't a clearly defined genre. Personally, I consider anything pre-grunge era (in the 90s) classic rock, so I consider Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, KISS, and others classic rock (but not everyone does, remember that). It's also rather wide in musical variety. Personally, I see Bob Dylan (folk rock), Elton John, Billy Joel (both soft/piano rock) and similar artists classic rock, but others don't so keep that in mind. And when it comes to Metal... Some metal can be considered classic rock (Black Sabbath are the godfathers of metal), while others can't. Judas Priest is one of the biggest influences on metal, same with Iron Maiden and a few others. The whole Classic Rock genre is undefined (though there are some things people would never consider classic rock), and I wouldn't be surprised if, few decades from now, grunge is considered Classic Rock. Pink Floyd: Dark side of the moon is the best place to start though wish you were here is great too. But anything of theirs is good! Beatles: For there earlier music get let it be for their later music White Album. If you want one album for everything get the album 1. Grateful Dead: I can't recommend albums but the best song to start out with is Friend of the Devil. Some other great bands are (Bold and underline are the ones I like better): Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Hendrix, Jethro Thul, Queen, Animals, Bob Dylan, Cream, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia Band, Kansas, King Crimson, R.E.M., Steppenwolf, U2, The Who, Cat Stevens and The Zombies. Posts: 528 Dec 5 09 3:50 PM	For classic rock, I would have to throw in some Def Leppard and Judas Priest as well. Hysteria and Pyromania are two of Def Leppard's greatest albums. I'd recommend a greatest hits album for Judas Priest, but if you want to avoid those, I'd go with British Steel cause Livin' After Midnight is a classic. Oh, and my favorite all time AC/DC album is For Those About Rock. An often overlooked album, but very solid. Anyone have any good recommendations on Kiss albums or the Beatles (more towards rock and less toward pop)?
