The game will launch partially unfinished, as is so typical of MMO's. At launch the only part accessible in the ship is the bridge.

One surprise:

The neatest aspect though is the custom race. Not all the races were in the game in the version I played, but they
did have the ability to take elements from all over to define and use your own brand new race. It's a wonder this
was allowed in an IP driven game, but given the limitless of space, it makes a lot of sense. They mentioned specifically,
they want to let people share these "races" they make with others too, which should be a neat little wrinkle.

Actually bridge crews operate as kind of companions on away missions and even when you group with other
players you should be able to use these STO "companions" as long as there is room in the group. So, you can
have a group of five captains or do at least the normal away missions easily with your crew members. It's
basically the same as with TOR.

As a negative thing it has been claimed by a tester leaking stuff that the planning of the game's away missions
and fighting have been lifted from Champions Online and toned down and modified, not made just for this game.
Whether that's good or bad, I don't know, as I haven't played Champions Online.

But, considering the rumoured lack of subscribers for Champions Online, Cryptic's future might well depend
largely on how well Star Trek Online sells. The fact that it is launching partly unfinished, not having any other
parts of the ship accessible except the bridge at launch, doesn't bode well, as just these kind of things doomed
the now rather good AoC and WAR to fight for survival.

Two I think are ok, but nothing more: Emissary and Destiny. The third is a little bit odd: Dervish. What have Sufi mystics
- who among other things dance themselves to ecstatic union with god - have to do with a ship class with escort duties?
