Posts: 43 06/18/09 12:15 PM	Having come into the Star Wars EU a little late in life (2007 when my first EU novel, Outboud Flight) I have only made it half way through the NJO series (just finished Star by Star, AWESOME!). It's sad because I have to sit on the sidelines while everyone discusses the newest books released, and I desperately want to catch up, but alas, I'm a slow reader. The good thing about it though is the ability to walk into the book store and pick up the next paperback inline, never having to wait on a release, which brings me to my question: Seeing as how a LOT of the gripes about the LotF series revolve around Invincible not tying up lose ends, will my being able to read through the series and jump right into FotJ make it more enjoyable? I know it is somewhat early to ask considering most have only had the chance to read Outcast, but I think most of us assume most issues will be dealt with through the series. But the bottom line is, I'm really excited about the FotJ series, and the more bad things I read about LotF (and yes, I have read the good things too), the more I want to read summaries and move ahead--after finishing NJO of course. Posts: 2290 06/18/09 12:24 PM	Even with all the gripes about LotF, and I've got a few myself, I would definately NOT recommend skipping these books. For starters, there are many people who will tell you that some of their favorite Star Wars books are among LotF (mine is Betrayal). Secondly, too many important things happen in this series to just skip it and read summaries. But finally, and most importantly, I would never take other people's opinion on if I should or should not read a series - you should at least check it out for yourself and see if you enjoy the first book. If you like it, keep going. If you hate it, then maybe it's time to think about reading summaries and skipping the rest of the series. But for me, while LotF may not be as good as the NJO, it is better than many of the Bantam era books. If you've suffered through some of the worst of those books (and if you're reading the books in order, I assume you have) then I can't imagine you'll hate LotF. I'd also point you to this topic (assuming you don't mind some spoilers) "10 Reasons why you liked/loved Legacy of the Force". You are greater than the Jedi of former days. Posts: 44 06/18/09 12:31 PM	I actually didn't read many books before starting NJO, there are just too many. I read all of Zahn's books then jumped in the NJO. I probably won't skip LotF; knowing that Jacen goes dark while reading the NJO is very interesting and I wouldn't want to miss that in LotF. My main question though is will it be better when I finish Invincible that I can go pick up the FotJ and keep on reading, never having to wait and wonder if things will be resolved.

Posts: 5387 06/18/09 4:17 PM	I'd suggest after NJO that you read the Dark Nest trilogy. It sets the stage for a lot of what follows in LOTF. A lot of people didn't seem to like DN, but I liked the trilogy and to jump from TUF to Betrayal is going to be WTF moment for you regarding Jacen if you don't read the bridge in between. DN definitely bridges that change.

For whatever crapness comes in at the end, there is plenty to keep you entertained in the first two thirds of the series, and even then, you may actually like the ending yourself. It all comes down to individual interpretation. But I would heartily recommend that you don't skip it all. To have knowledge of LOTF and what happens therein, will significantly increase your readng enjoyment of FOTJ, and I say that just off of Outcast alone, and I don't see this opinion changing.

Posts: 5318 06/19/09 12:26 AM	Eh... I wouldn't say FotJ fixes any of the issues. It was a great series, but it wasn't put together as cohesively as many feel it should have been, and the plot seemed a lot more quantum than many readers preferred. While this might not bother you, this is one of the issues that leaves strong negative feelings toward LotF when viewed as a series. The more subjective details are... well, more subjective, though I do have a feeling that many will be resolved in FotJ (in terms of seemingly dropped plotlines), but in the end those issues boil down more to personal taste than anything that can really be improved upon. Posts: 11 06/19/09 1:02 AM	If u're thrilled with the AWESOME EPIC NJO, you must read LotF. Lost ends of the serie can always be corrected in the future (let's hope a future not so far away) and what can not be denied is the novels of LotF are probably the best written SW things ever. 9 novels is the good length, 3 GOOD authors is not too much, not too less, and among these 3 authors, 2 are NJO-veteran so they know perfectly the NJO and Legacy era. Now everyone can have his opinion on the plot. An I would say you can not live without having read the "Tempest-Exile-Sacrifice-Inferno-Fury" which is my favorite part of LotF.

And even though certain parts of it were a letdown, the series has some great moments. Quite a few, actually. The substance is still there, though. There were those who hated it, or disliked it, but then there was also many who thoroughly enjoyed it. You may be one of those who enjoyed it and by reading it you won't miss out. And besides, you have to read the awesomeness that is Tempest, Sacrifice, and Inferno. Every Denning novel in the series was awesome (some disliked INVINCIBLE only because of the loose ends it left lying around, but content-wise, it was rich and satisfying for me. Especially both Caedus/Jaina duels). BETRAYAL was great, SACRIFICE was an integral part of the series as a whole, and FURY wasn't too bad. The rest of them were pretty boring and uneventful, but important nonetheless.

Invincible only made me see the holes of the plot and characterization but I really liked Allston's contributions as well as Revelation (although I think I may be in the minority on that one). S1thari you liked the anti-climactic duel?? For shame

Lately it has all been about the authors writing for themselves and their own limited ideas rather than expanding on a great universe that was started by Timothy Zahn and others. I believe the last great chapter of the EU was the YV war. Darth Reckoner, you should stop after the Unifying force. I know you want more but trust me you will wish you hadn't. What made Zahn's books great along with the early YV war series was that the future was still uncertain and the characters we know were trying to deal with it. There were still questions about the force and where everyone fit. Now its all about who ends up with who, who cracks silly one liners using made up curse words created by mediocre authors ("kriffing"? and since when does Luke curse?), and how the characters no longer resemble themselves or what they could possibly become. Star Wars Books should either get back to being about Star Wars and expanding on what we know or stop being made. Star wars novels used to be more than fluff on the shelf. Not to mention, the quality and reading level of these books has decreased to junior high / elementary level. The craft just isn't there anymore. Basically, its all beginning to read like fan fiction, which i guess is what some people like, but If I wanted that, I know I Shouldn't have to pay hardcover prices to get it. Given that the last couple of arcs have been decided by committee, with members of said committees being authors not even writing on those series, as well as the editors themselves, I don't see how this is the case. I'm glad you seem to have all the answers: I don't. For starters, the onus of "Who ends up with whom" was started by the fans, not the authors. You'll find that curse words like "Kriff" were actually invented by none other than Timothy Zahn, not Troy Denning. Sorry to spoil your authorial jab. Vision of the Future: that Imperial spy on Bothawui working in the emporium says "kriff." There may even be earlier Bantam instances. And I believe that that one reference you refer to with Luke swearing... Hey, he doesn't swear. That scene actually highlighted how abnormal it is for him to swear. But one would forgive him for swearing given that he has just found out information about his mother after knowing nothing his whole life and then the one window he has to her is taken away by a faulty omnigate or whatever it was. Star Wars Books should either get back to being about Star Wars and expanding on what we know or stop being made. I would argue that FOTJ - for example - is exapnding the universe: Force lore, expanding cultures we've not seen much of so far, bringing us characters who have sat on the sidelines for ages (Jysella Horn anyone) and providing a storyline which is something we've never seen before: Luke forcibly cut off from the Jedi Order, and Jedi having psychotic breaks. I know I Shouldn't have to pay hardcover prices to get it. I agree with this point.
