I don't know why but I got the impression that Jacen searched and moved on, he didn't go back to somewhere he had already failed to find what he was
looking for.

After a week of waiting for payday, I finally got my copy... and I was pretty astonished (in a good way) at how great the cover art looked in person as
opposed to the online image previews. The Abyss color scheme looks the best so far, and I imagine that it'll look that much better when it comes out.

Blame it on some Red Sith genes? Otherwise she does look a bit too mature, Ben looks a bit too young, so it probably comes even. Or something.

I know excessive use of the dark side can start to weather one's body, but the model for that image looks at least 30 or so...

Dark Side use should make the body become decrepit, not age a person so that the person still looks healthy and normal.
But of course many people naturally at some points in their lives look much older or younger than they really are, so perhaps Vestara is just one of them. |

Definitely more pleasing to the eye than the color scheme of Outcast, in my opinion. I like orange, but only if it's set against black, or an equally
darker tone. The orange-white looked very bland... and, well, a bit like vomit to be honest.
I also find myself wanting to learn more about Vestara than I do any other character and/or plot in this book thus far. Jysella's brief little incident was fun, particularly the fact that she was able to anticipate the future so deftly... and flow-walk. I wonder if this is something the other Jedi Mad-ee's can do as well, or is it limited only to Jysella? Perhaps each "Mad-ee" inherits a unique ability in the Force when they go Mad, sort of like when Seff Hellin Force-paralyzed those GA intelligence agents in Millenium Falcon...? It's all coming dangerously close to Jacen.

Wow. Christie Golden hits it out of the park in her first SW book. Very well done Ms. Golden.
Liked: - The Ben and Luke scenes continue to be a highlight. I'm glad it wasn't smooth sailing this time though. It's perfectly natural for a sixteen year old and his father to not always see eye to eye (even if in this case its over time travel ). So far with this series I've really been pleased with how they are
treating the relationship between father and son. Very realistic and believable.
-I hate to insult the Baran Do, but the Aing-Tii were much, much more interesting to read about. Seriously. I wish the narrative had spent more time with them. -Corax mentioned this in his review, but I also wanted to point out that Ms. Golden's references to the movies were well appreciated by this fan. From the smelly taun tauns to Yoda and Obi Wan and even Biggs Darklighter (!). Just awesome. Now, I could very well be wrong about this, but it seems like aside from some mainstays ("Do or do not," etc.) we really don't get many original trilogy references in EU material anymore and that's really a shame. -Vestara and the Lost Tribe were very well done as well. I find myself fascinated by the idea of a person trained their entire life to be a Sith. Most of the Sith we're familiar with have been fallen Jedi. They used to embrace the light, but they chose a different path. Vestera has presumably never seen the light. It should be interesting to see how she reacts to encountering Jedi for the first time. And obviously how she reacts to Ben Skywalker as I don't think it's that much of a secret what they are planning for the two of them... -I'm also pleased that Cilghal is shaping up to be a major character in this series. She has been tragically underused for too long. Didn't Like: -The book was just too damn short. I'm not even talking about the slim page count, but story wise. We could have spent a good bit more time with both Luke/Aing Tii and with Vestara/Lost Tribe. Those were the two storylines in the book that could have used a little more space to grow IMO. |

I find it interesting no one suspects Allana is related to Tenel Ka. Does no one see the resemblance?

I find it interesting no one suspects Allana is related to Tenel Ka. Does no one see the resemblance? A) Her hair is dyed brown, and B) Fury described her as taking after Jacen more than Tenel Ka. In fact, her resemblance to Jacen is why Tenel Ka made sure to keep her away from the public eye.

That brings up the question why does no one notice that the adopted daughter of elderly Solos resembles Jacen?
And connecting her to either Tenel Ka or Jacen is just one DNA test away. It's not like getting a hair from her and her parents (or their close relatives) for comparison would be utterly impossible. |

While that's true, no one's had reason to suspect it or go down that road.
Because, really, why would anyone bother doing a DNA test on "an adopted war orphan"?

If she looks like Jacen Solo, then there are lot of people who might become interested. Not just Saint Daala - to who it would be a neat propaganda coup: Jedi
participating in the hiding of the daughter of a Dark Lord of the Sith, all kinds of avenues for tabloid style crazy headlines - but even someone who would
want to blackmail the elderly Solos. Make them do something in exchange of keeping silent on Allana's paternity. And finding out that she is the supposedly
dead daughter of Tenel Ka would also open both a possibility for blackmail and a lucrative payment from Tenel Ka's opponents among Hapans.

Allana's hair was dyed black, throwing off her look resembling Tenel Ka. Furthermore, yes, a DNA test could be done but who would want it? News Reporters
can demand it or some other character can, but that doesn't mean Han and Leia have to do it. They could easily get around that. The only way I can see them
being forced to do one is if Daala orders it, though I doubt she would, at least right now with all that is going on.

I know Daala's playing a bit fast and loose with the GA constitution, but she'd have to have a darn good reason that a court would accept before she
could get a DNA test done on Allana.
About DNA testing: First of all, you need a hair with a root attached to extract the DNA. That was the whole point behind Jacen's pulling Mara's hair out in their duel. Secondly, you need something to compare it to. Without Jacen's DNA as well, Allana's isn't going to mean squat. And contrary to popular belief what DNA does is rule out; not prove. Or a negative kind of proof if you will. |

My knowledge of genetics isn't that great, but I'll give it a go nonetheless. At least horrible mistakes in this will be amusing:
Jacen's DNA might be around somehow still, but one could be sneaky enough to get DNA from Tenel Ka for study or those of relatives could do. Leia would share X-chromosome with Allana, same with her cousins on Naboo, and there are relatives of Tenenniel Djo's on Dathomir who share the same X-chromosome as Tenel Ka. I know that there are changes in X-chromosomes in each generation and that it isn't this easy in practice. And then there's mitochondrial DNA, available also from members of Tenel Ka's maternal lineage. Those wouldn't perhaps nail the identification, but would be prove enough in the eyes of many. And you don't need any court orders, just the usual case of a Solo child getting kidnapped for a moment and coming back without few hairs, losing some blood etc. |

I know I'm a bit late in the game. Has anybody else thought that it'd be a neat idea if the authors introduced a journalist that was actually
sympathetic to the Jedi? Maybe like a Holonet version of a blogger?

A) Her hair is dyed brown, and B) Fury described her as taking after Jacen more than Tenel Ka. In fact, her resemblance to Jacen is why Tenel Ka made sure to keep her away from the public eye.Apparently no one remembers how in Millennium Falcon they told us how Allana DOES NOT DYE HER HAIR ANYMORE. And yes, the novel did make a point of this, because I remember jumping for joy because the whole "dye your hair to totally fool every single person ever into thinking you are someone else" trick rarely works as well in the real world as it seems to in fiction. So Allana goes by her natural red now, which not only pleases me, but renders moot all the discussion saying, "Oh no one will ever figure it out because Han and Leia and Tenel Ka craftily have her dye her hair." And I fail to see how people pointing out that Allana resembling Jacen more in terms of physical appearance will throw off people either. Either way you look at it - people finding out that Allana is Tenel Ka's daughter OR people finding out Allana is Jacen's daughter - it is equally scandalous and incendiary for the Solos, and for Tenel Ka. 1. If people find out that Allana is Tenel Ka's daughter in the care of Han and Leia Solo this means people find out that Allana's death was faked; that the potential Hapan heir is being raised outside of the Consortium and by non-Hapans and also by Jedi; that the Hapan royal lineage is further being diluted and "tainted" and ruined by Jedi interference (and DNA, heh); and that Tenel Ka, the QUEEN MOTHER, had a baby with a man who is more or less a genocidal megalomaniac that tried to co-opt their fleets and stuff and is considered more or less a war criminal. Its quite scandalous and sacriligeous not only to Hapans, but other people as well. 2. If people find out that Allana is Jacen's daughter then some of them will throw a hissy fit about how all he did was to protect her ("What makes that kid's life more important than the thousands of Corellians and Bothans who died in concentration camps? What makes her more worthy of living than all those people who were killed when the Jedi blowed up Centerpoint and stuff?") People aren't going to look at it the way a reader of this series would, and while a large chunk of people across the galaxy probably wouldn't give two hoots either way, if certain people found out Jacen had a daughter, they'd begin to ask a lot of questions about him, and the choices he made, and how these choices affected other people. People will also begin to ask questions about what happens when Jedi have children, and Jedi and attachments, and Sith Lords and attachments... Some people will also perhaps attempt to get at people like Han and Leia through their grand-daughter. It is one thing for some villain to look at Han and Leia and go, "Hhhhhmmmm... If I want to irrevocably hurt these people I will steal their adopted war orphaned daughter" and quite another to say, "Hhhhmmmm... If I want to irrevocably hurt these people I will steal their GRAND-DAUGHTER." I'm assuming you can all see that the levels of hurt differ in each case, as would the plans of the villain. And I can see a certain wolf pack of Imperial Moffs who may wish to get at Jagged Fel by getting to Jaina Solo by doing something nasty with her (Jaina's) niece. And if Jaina and Jag ever get married then Allana would be Jag's niece too. I think there's also the question of what people may do to Allana if they find out that she is not only Jacen's daughter, but FORCE-SENSITIVE. It is one thing for the Solos to be caring for war orphan Amelia, who as far as the galaxy knows, is just some random Hapan (?) war refugee, but if one were to have the revelation that she is the GRAND-DAUGHTER of the Solos, then they would come to understand that not only is she Force-sensitive, but also harnessing the POWAH of the lineage of Anakin Skywalker. Allana's hair was dyed black, throwing off her look resembling Tenel Ka. Furthermore, yes, a DNA test could be done but who would want it? News Reporters can demand it or some other character can, but that doesn't mean Han and Leia have to do it. They could easily get around that. The only way I can see them being forced to do one is if Daala orders it, though I doubt she would, at least right now with all that is going on. Apart from randomly going through someone's hairbrush, or totally scoping out their home to try and find a hair, or an eyelash or shed skin or something, the only way you can really legally get someone's DNA is through a court order, and even then, you'd have to have a valid reason. Some random news journalist being all, "Well, I think that the adopted ward of the Solos is not who they claim her to be" doesn't really hold up in a court of law. But having said that, I can see Daala getting on her high horse in terms of throwing lawsuits every which way which seems to be a hobby of hers and actually GETTING a valid reason to do this. Yes, she is that much of a beeeeyotch. And I notice that almost always when discussing topics such as these people always refer to people cluing in on Allana's physical resemblance to either of her parents. But what about her Force aura? What happens when some random One Sith or something that somehow knew what Jacen felt like in the Force walks past Allana and gets hit with a sense of familiarity? And on that note, just how does Allana Force-confuse all the other Jedi? We know she's had at least some education on Shedu Maad, and conceivably in the Coruscant Temple, but what I remain unclear on is if Han and Leia have gone around telling everyone that their "daughter" is Force-sensitive or not!?? And if NOT, then just how does Allana clamp down on her Force aura being surrounded by Jedi every day? I'm thinking that Tenel Ka cooked up a decent cover story, and Han and Leia are no slouches in this department either, but it rankles me that as readers we have virtually no clue when we really should. |
