Hey guys -- congrats on recieving an advanced copy. Although I've been scrolling through this thread with one eye closed, a few people have been asking me
if a Dramatis Personae came w/ the review copy? If so, would anyone be kind enough to post it? If not, no worries.
Much appreciated! |

Wow, Kirr, didn't really expect you to offer them. I guess that means we're spoiling everything now. Thank god they asked the question because THE
spoiler has been BURNING in my head ever since I read it.
Any Tenel Ka/Hapes things involved? I don't believe so. For a moment I was mixing up some Outcast and Omen stuff in my head, but I believe all mentions were in Outcast. Any appearances by the YJK? Not as many of their members as I'd have liked, I have to say. Anything noteworthy happen to the characters? No, sorry, they just sat around and drank caf So it's a cliffhanger and Jaina's answer isn't told? If it weren't so awesome I would let you wonder about this but I HAVE TO SAY... Have the Aing-tii been worth waiting? Do they stand up in skills and knowledge to the Jedi (or supercede them) as personified by Luke and Ben, or do they play in the lower Force leagues? This is really hard to judge and it might be best to leave to your own interpretation. Who is the flow-walking Jedi and do her/his action make sense when it comes to what we know of flow-walking? And does it make Jacen's flow-walking less impressive? Well... it would have been nice to have Jacen around for this. Actually, this whole novel reeks of missing Jacen in a way that it seems Invincible intended, and I have a feeling Golden didn't. Jacen would have had a different name for it (fighting-sight, is it called?), and this basically explains it's a form of flow-walking but there's really nobody around to go into the specifics- hopefully, this is something Dennning will do in Abyss, as this is something he's good at. As for who... well, it's early enough that I'm not shocking anyone by saying it's Miss Jysella Horn. And it doesn't really, because it indicates the combat ability he had (making both him and Jaina more impressive in their duels in Invincible), and because Jysella had no conscious control over the technique whatsoever. Does Daala appear more likely to be a major villain in the series after this? (Or a true villain at all.) I would say that, like in Outcast, she comes into the role of a Hero That We Hate, much like Yoda in many novels. Anything about Confederation and the unification talks? I was thinking it was, but I think that was in Outcast. If not... then it was here, but I don't believe so. Is the Centerpoint/Kessel -subplot from Outcast continued in any form? I feel it was... but I suppose only time will tell. Things involving the Maw area were mentioned, in any case.

I apologize - seeing as how we at NJOE recieved an advanced reader copy from the publisher, and we're not supposed to be giving out spoilers until release
of the book - I take back what I said earlier about spoiling the heck out of the novel. Iurus post (as well as mine in response to Jaina/Jag) were really just
responses to questions - and Iurus' at least was only mildly spoilery. To be honest, the Jaina/Jag thing is the biggest spoiler in the book - and it seems
I only confirmed what some others already knew.
That said, those of us from NJOE staff who've read the advance reader copy (myself, Iurus, and corax) will only be monitoring the spoilers in this forum - ensuring that no incorrect information gets out there. We may answer some questions (but we may also ignor some questions), and even when we do answer it'll mostly be in the way Iurus himself posted answers above. I apologize - in my zeal for having a spoiler forum and people to finally talk to about Omen, I forgot to abide by the rules set down when we recieved the ARC.

I address that very question (because I know it's going to be on a lot of people's minds) at the very beginning of my review.
Omen is one of my top 20 Star Wars books ever. Probably not in the top ten, but close. It's that good. I enjoyed the hell out of it, and can't wait for Golden's next Star Wars book.

Sounds good. I'll ask a less plot explicit question, then. Is Christie Golden's style similar to Traviss in any way? It seemed like Golden was put in
place to replace her because some fans didn't like her, so I assume they're pretty dissimilar, but to whoever's read the book, do you think
she's better than Karen Traviss? I'll try and get it soon, but I haven't even been able to find Outcast yet (sigh). In contrast to LOTF which was
out on time regularly in Singapore, I think this series will skip my country by for a while.

Thanks for those mild (
Based on the posts here I get the idea that not much - beyond that one event - of real consequence happens in the novel, that the overall plot doesn't move forward, there's no big revelations etc, yet the novel is good. Could someone lighten this in a way that doesn't contravene those ARC rules? Explain what makes Omen so good? |

Anonymous170694 wrote:No, I think Traviss was replaced because she's currently writing two other series for Star Wars, and I have a feeling a third on the side (though I don't know for sure). She's one of the up and coming stars of Del Rey right now, and I don't see her being tossed aside because her detractors are more vocal than others (because she's not less liked than other authors, just loudly disliked). That said, and I don't see this as a spoiler because you can tell at the end of Omen, the general feel is that Christie Golden's writing is very close in feel to that of Aaron Allston. If you read Star Wars because the characters are awesome, the environment is detailed, and it straddles that awesome line between action, drama and comedy, that sums up Omen very succintly.

I think I can answer both Anon's and Rogue's questions here. First Christie Golden isn't like Karen Traviss in terms of writing for this series. I
won't start an argument on who is the better author because essentially that's the reader's choice to make not mine

And I'll follow up on Rogue's question/statement that things don't advance in Omen - I believe it to be the opposite (and say so in my review). I
actually feel like FotJ STARTS with Omen. Things felt much more purposeful in this book. Lots of things of consequence happen, just nothing so revelatory that
you'd don't already know some of it from the released blurbs. Prior to the blurbs, one of the secrets would have been the existance of the Tribe, or
what Omen actually means - but those are common knowledge now. Still, there are plenty of new plot points brought up in this book that you haven't yet
heard about, advancing the overall arc in ways that I don't think Outcast really accomplished.

Not sure if this was already asked or even can be asked but, How was the Aing-Tii? What everyone was hoping for or a bit dissapointing?
Jaina realized with a cold shudder that Jacen had not failed. He had sacrificed everything-his name, his family, his reputation, his life- to unite the
galaxy. And now here Jaina was, watching the birth of a galaxywide league of worlds dedicated to working together in peace. Had Jacen won after all?
