Whats going on this summer |
Lead | ||
|
As school lets out for me on thursday the 21st I feel compelled to share my own plans and ask some of our school aged people whats going on with them this
summer as well, except for Mizz- all year rounds a bit tough isn't it? In June I am going to play in a couple of baseball tournaments, theirs always the
possibility of making it to the Little League World Series but with out team I'd say that going to regionals would be a good start. So with my expected
baseball season over by June I then head to the beach for this sailing camp so I can actually be of help on my grandparents boat. Then just hit the beach for a
week. Lastly, band camp starts and my life as I know it ends. So what are all of you people doing?
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most
frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people don't feel insecure around
you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give
other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Mariane Williamson

Nothing much this holiday- too much schoolwork, but then again we only have one month break for now. And I was going to Hungary for some chess competition, but
the kriffing swine flu caused problems (yes, I know it doesn't affect Hungary), so I'm giving that a miss. It must be kind of fun having a three month
long break instead of it being split up into four shorter ones.

I suppose, though I'm so used to it I don't really mind. *shrugs* Plus, that means I graduate earlier. ![]() ![]() ![]()

It must be kind of fun having a three month long break instead of it being split up into four shorter ones. Anon, studies show that having year-round school with more frequent shorter breaks, is more beneficial to the student as opposed to 9 months with a three-month break. The learning retention is better. As our systems was developed around being an agricultural society with a short growing season, all family members were needed during that short 3-4 month period. That isn't the case here any long, and many schools have gone to year-round school.
I'm pretty sure Mizz does more than just stare at a text book. And define normal. My niece goes to a traditional public high school and she's still graduating early with college credits no less. |

Let's see for the kids' summer break there will be swimming, teaching my daughters how to play basketball, bonfires, camping, and bike riding. For
myself I'm planning on tubing the mighty Iowa river this summer with a few buddies and I'm trying to get the 501st to make an appearance for my
town's one day festival in June.

Since I have only a few more days of actually being a student before I unceremoniously become an adult, it is with a heavy heart that I say...
work. Either in Washington D.C. for my internship or as an office manager (in training) for my dad's law firm. No more spending a summer
afternoon at NJOE... unless it's on a weekend.

Well, I'm sure it's beneficial to studying- but except for the December holiday, we do get quite a bit of work during our holidays, so I still
like the idea of a three month straight break, since you can't get assignments during that period- right?

Let's see for the kids' summer break there will be .... Oh, Corax. I feel almost normal when I read some
of your posts.
That's where I start, too. Summer for us as a family means we shift gears from the regular extra-curricular activities and jump head-long into soccer. Both my two play, and my husband coaches. I ... umm ... I'm the chauffeur. It's an important job!! Beyond that, each youngling has their summer packed with various camps (pottery, sailing, cycling, etc). As for my hubby and I .... I'd have to say that year-round schooling idea is perfect training for the real world! But we do get a two-week break when we take this motley crew out to the West Coast. Some time on the ocean, some hiking adventures through mountains and rainforest, some time watching the kids pick fresh cherries from the trees in the orchard and climb the apple trees ... all good stuff! But forget oceans and orcas and old-growth forests ..... having no lunchboxes to pack for two weeks? That's gonna be the best part!!

The learning retention is better. As our systems was developed around being an agricultural society with a short growing season, all family members were needed during that short 3-4 month period. That isn't the case here any long, and many schools have gone to year-round school. I know Dartmouth has a summer term. Students can either stay on campus and do stuff, go abroad, or just go home. It's their choice, but I think one of the summer terms is a mandatory stay-on-campus one. For me anyway, I'm going to hold down my usual summer job at a local water park. Besides that, I'll probably go to a few concerts in the area and write stories. ---The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. I get out of school on the 29th. I'll most likely be on the computer 24-7! Once in a while I might go to the Track, I want to run the 400-meter dash Sub-55
seconds next year!

Anybody who supports all round school is to me highly insane. Think about all of the things you couldn't do. Besides a nagging suspicion that I have had
for years is that education is to specific. I fail to see the point of learning alot of things that I never remember. Seriously Uliah, if one of your sons came
to you and said "Do you know how to do Algebra II/trig?" could you remember? I think that education has gotten overbloated. Basic skills should be
imparted, like how to use a computer or balance a checkbook. A general knowledge of math like addition, subtraction etc. Not angles and polynomials. Teach them
but to me people should be able to select what they do. I think that education should be about providing an overview because what happens in my mind is that
brilliant kids get overwhelmed by certain subjects like math that get crammed down their throat. They want to suceed at them but at the same time they ignore a
special ability they might have, say music, or writing. So in my mind all year round school is only provoking part of what I see as the problem.

misguided thinking in your post.

I don't see supporters of year round school as insane. When that option was discussed when I was in school we would have had breaks throughout the year and
we still would have been able to choose our own classes. I don't know of too many students who have been forced to take classes that didn't suit their
interests for life after college. I'm going to make a bold statement here that some might not agree with, but if a person is brilliant and can't
multitask at a young age to achieve what they want to then they aren't that brilliant to begin with. Because if we are talking about real world skills that
should be learned in school there is nothing bigger than multitasking. For the love of pete I've been multitasking during this whole post, settling
arguments, starting a movie, and hopefully making a point

Graduating early is not all it's cracked up to be... I would definitely trade the semesters of scraping together cash for a couple classes for an extra
year of free education.

living in the UK im not sure what you mean my year round schools i suppose you mean your learning for the entire year but with a couple of weeks off every now
and again. in the uk we have a christmass holiday for 2 weeks and a easter holiday for 2 weeks and a summer holiday that for most people last from some time im
middle july to early september so around 6 weeks and that works quite well with a weeks half term in the middle of each term. im not sure if this is related to
your year round system or whatever

I'm not a math person either, but I think it's important that I know how to do things like trig and algebra. Even more important that, if it's a
challenge for me, I find a way to surmount it.
people should be able to select what they do. There's some truth in that. My dad went to med school in India. There, you have to choose your vocation after ninth grade and take specific classes for the rest of high school. In his case, he took science and math. And then he went to college. He's a little appalled that becoming a doctor in the States requires four years of undergrad plus four years of med school, and then the five or so carrying out your internship, residency, and so on. The same process in India is shorter by a few years. But I also think there's definite value in a well-rounded education. ---The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far... H.P Lovecraft.
