Posts: 4266 12/21/08 6:01 PM	Tags : None Since no one else has started a thread on Wild Space, I guess I will. First off, let me just say this was a very satisfying read. Karen Miller did a great job, and spun some new perspectives on some pet peeves. First one is Padme's death which she foreshadows and lifts into something more than it was in ROTS. The second is the much-maligned midichlorians and it's a great spin; a must read. What I really like is that it's no retcon and uses the midichlorions in a very descriptive way. The Bail/Obi-Wan relationship is great, especially as they start off mostly annoying each other. The progression of their relationship is a joy to read. This book is going to go down as one of this year's best reads. Maybe one of my all-time favs in SW lit. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the cover. The cover should be Bail and Obi-Wan, and the person who okayed the Clone cover should be shot. It has virtually nothing to do with the story. otherwise completely two-thumbs up.

I think this book is deserving of some discussion all on it's own - and I compare it to Path of Destruction - a novel that came out of nowhere and wound up being one of my favorite reads of that year. I'm only 90ish pages in, so I won't give any spoilers really - just some hints of what you can expect in this novel. Some of these are repeats from my Literature (what are you reading) post, but they bear repeating for anyone who doesn't frequent that topic/board: Do you not like Traviss' take on clones, etc? Miller's is completely different. Are you annoyed that The Clone Wars is stomping all over continuity? Miller actually attempts to fit this in place. Did you ever want to see the reactions of some of these characters (Obi-Wan, Yoda, Anakin - badly wounded you'll remember, Padme) to the events of "Attack of the Clones"? Miller does this too. Want to see what happened in between that battle on Genosis and Anakin/Padme's wedding? It's here. Want to see Palpatine drive a hovercar with uneasy passengers Padme and Bail? Yup. Want to have some scenes from giving you Palpatine/Sidious' thoughts? That's here. How about a sparring match between Obi-Wan and Anakin witnessed by a dozen Padawans (including Ashoka)? Hell yeah. This book has given me things I didn't even realize I wanted. I've enjoyed the heck out of what I've read so far. Anyone put off by this series or the previous author owes themselves to give Wild Space a try.

Palps actually comes across as a human being in some of these moments, which is not to detract from the fact that the reader is often also shown inside his thoughts as he constantly plots and adjusts and 'pretends' to have real emotions.

Posts: 2466 12/22/08 6:26 PM	I will also note that ever since Uliah posted that scene about Padme and the whole dying of a broken heart spiel, Wild Space intrigued the hell out of me and I was not, repeat not, disappointed. Karen Miller is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Posts: 2468 12/23/08 2:08 AM	Definitely. I recommend this book to anyone who feels a little disillusioned with SW in general. Like Uliah said, the twists Miller puts on some things makes you have faith that the EU is not imploding on itself. I can actually go back and appreciate some tidbits that I thought were lame before. That and Miller has a great writing style IMO. Knows how to pull you in even on things you where you already know the outcome.

Posts: 1672 12/23/08 10:49 AM	Yes. It is the Darth Bane: Path of Destruction of this year. It will make my top 10 of the year list (it may be the only Star Wars book to make that list this year). That said, I also don't want to raise expectations too high. It's a very good novel. It probably wouldn't crack my 'top ten Star Wars books of all time' - but it would probably be in my top 20.
