The Cancellation Pool |
Lead | ||
|
As you should well know, the occasional Star Wars book gets cancelled. Now, if you were unaware, there is a thing called a "death pool", wherein
people bet on who and when certain notable people will die. In that vein, I hereby present the Cancellation Pool. We already know nearly half of the new
contract already, but do we know for certain that most of these books will make it to the presses?
Discuss, Debate, Bet, whatever... which books, if any, do you think are most likely to be on the chopping block? (PS. - if you can't remember what's coming up, take a look at the list in the Book Schedule Thread.) You seem to find the dark, when everything is bright

You know why I hate you, Max? Because you just reminded me that we will not get a Darth Plagueis novel by James Luceno, and implied that every book other than
ForJ has a chance of suffering the same fate.

Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. |

I'm guessing that Traviss' Boba Fett novel is in the greatest danger, considering that she has already had to give couple of books away to Miller. Too
many commitments from the side of the author has been the reason - at least official - for cancellation already before.

Also possible the horror novel could be canceled, though I hope not.

I really, really, really hope the horror novel will not get cancelled. I think that it would be a good niche in the SW that has not been fleshed out. For some
reason I still think this book has a good chance of making it through
But I will second the holonet star novel as much as i would love to read this story if it is about syal and soontir. It seems that DR would then come to the conclusion that the novel characters are too "obscure" and therefore cancel it becasue they don't think enough fans would read it. Although considering SW fans are some of the most loyal ones out there and will read almost any novel they give us, I don't quite understand that reasoning. |

I think the Clone Wars series will not make it to 5 books. After 3, it will stop IMO

You know how there was that spiffy Darth Plagueis/Young Darth Sidious book that was already in the process of being WRITTEN when they cancelled it? The one
that would've featured a B-plot of Qui-Gon Jinn searching for the Force Ghost ability from the Whills? I still posit that this book contained so much WIN
and AWESOME and SHEER BADASSERY that Del Rey looked at it in its early stages and said, "This is full of what fans crave and desire. Cancel. Cancel now.
Abort cool book, abort!"
So yeah, if anything they'll cut the holo-star and or horror story and probably replace it with something shite or dodgy like a book about some random new characters we don't care at all about running around in the background of the movies. |

If the holostar novel is about that couple which was a gift to imperial propaganda, Fel matriarch and patriarch, I don't think it has much chance to get
cancelled, considering the Fel mythos they are building in EU, making it the "second family" of EU after Skywalkers and replacement for the Solos.
But if it isn't about them, then I agree that there's a relatively big chance it will get cancelled.

I think the Indy book(s) could be the next thing to be cancelled. There isn't a whole lot of anticipation for them right now. In the same vein Rob
McGregor's adaptation of the Indy video game also falls into the same category. If the game falls through the cracks I don't see the book being
released.

Well, Corax gets 50 points for saying the Indy game book. Even though the game came out, the book was nixed.

My risk assessment (as of right now):
High - Blood Oath The lack of a submitted manuscript and the tight deadline make this high risk. Medium - Holostar, Indy and the Army of the Dead, Boba Fett novel, Nomi Sunrider, Classic Zahn Holostar is brought down from high risk due to the publicity Bohnoff's blog is generating, Indy is threatened by a possible lack of interest but high risk because they do seem to want a new Indy publishing program, Boba Fett is here because of Traviss' tightening schedule and the time passed between it and LotF might create a lack of interest, Nomi Sunrider is in the medium group simply for the utter lack of information we have on it, and Classic Zahn is so far out it's impossible to know what might happen with it. Low - Death Troopers, CW 4 & 5, FotJ, ImpCom, Sean Williams book, Darth Bane 3, Crosscurrent, These books have a low chances of cancellation from being parts of ongoing or popular series, (FOTJ, Impcom, DB3) having their first or even revised drafts in and approved, (DB3, CW 4, CC) or having already been highly publicized. (DT, FOTJ) And the Williams slides in by the fact that the publisher is intentionally keeping mum on the project, meaning it's possibly important.

Actually, I think it is kind of sad we have a thread for this, and a superstituous person would claim we're in actuality, jinxing things from coming to
pass.

Even the author has been kind of quiet on the subject. We have no idea whether he's even started it or not.

Before I tell you, I'd like to note that this is an informal, just-for-fun "betting" thread.
Nobody is saying it's in trouble, so you don't have to go asking any questions of the VIPS or going around telling anyone that somebody over here said the book might be in trouble or any of that stuff. If you do take this and start a rumor of it, then I will personally hold you in contempt and denounce your "information" publicly. Now that I've given you the disclaimer, the author is Alexander Irvine. (Gotta be careful nowadays, after people jumped all over us for even speculating about Blood Oath.)

Asking about BO in TOS was my fault if it is someone's fault. Peter asked because I asked him to.
I don't see it as a fault at all, because those who screamed about the question on TOS and elsewhere were wrong - BO was in trouble - and are in my opinion silly people who think that no negative things should ever be brought up before VIPs. If BO was cancelled, they wanted no one to know it until DR wanted to say something, and afterwards they would want all to forget all about it. Just smiles all around. So, I think they were wrong. But if it was wrong to ask, then the blame is mine.
