well with the tales of books if i remember correctly each book is written by a different person they are then compilled by another of the fees to the authors
might end up being a lot higher then for a book written by just one person so that would mean del rey would have to sell a lot mpre books then normal to get
the money back so less viable then normal books

Wizards of the Coast seems to have done a pretty good job with their various Realms books (collections of short stories by established and up and coming
authors) in thier Forgotten Realms world.

It's a pity that it has come to this.
What comes to the different reactions to the cancellation of BO and Traviss' departure, my view is that Cunningham was seen after DJ as working inside the existing universe, clearly inside it's limits and that BO was expected to be a classic, middle of the road SW novel which would hold no great surprises. It would have been a safe novel and in harmony with the EU. A conservative choice, one could say, a tie-in that wouldn't over-reach. Traviss, on the other hand, seemed more ambitious. I want to say that I say what follow without claiming it to be bad or good in itself: She wanted to claim part of the universe as her own turf, make her own path through it, and leave her mark that way. And that part were the Clones and the Mandalorians. And she was ready to break down existing limits of the universe, rewrite things to suit her vision. So there was a discord with the existing canon, a radical attempt to re-orient parts of it to fit her vision. Like it or not (and I mostly didn't like it, I admit) her novels in the end tried to be more than just traditional tie-ins. They over-reached. |

Once Star Wars books started being pumped out in earnest (1994, as Zahn had one of the Thrawn books released in the three years preceeding and no other adult novels were published in that time frame), it took only two years for the first X-Wing book to be released. It wasn't a matter of certain books being "commercially unviable." |

Sue specifically mentioned that they want to feature the new generation but fans won't shut up about the "Big Three". Certain fans.

The problem with this claim is that DR wants largely to feature the new generation as dead corpses. Use them, don't kill them, perhaps then fans will have
more faith in changing of the guards.
Of course, I would be happy for DR to kill off Ben Skywalker and Jagged Fel before doing this change of guard. |

First up, both Nom and Boba are right. Forget about publishing dates, if you read interviews with the folks involved they mention many times that they felt
they were taking a big risk with Rogue Squadron - that they just weren't sure about the viability of a story without the big three. I'll also say as a
fan I ignored those books for years - I was able to buy up through Solo Command in one shot because they were all out already. So it's interesting to me
that the publication date for RS is as early as it is - apparently Bantam was willing to take risks then.
Which leads to point two - and Acky's observation. Is DR less interested in taking risks now. I'm not sure - the Bane novels seem to be doing well enough that I assume it was part of the reasoning behind the Sunrider novel. At the same time, DR seems more consrrvative (as Rogue says) in the post-RotJ era, wanting to make sure fans of the big three are sated. It could be that with more dilution (remember Bantam only had like a twenty-five year time span to work with - so introducing other characters was almost a necessity - DR has thousands of years to work with) they feel the books in a certain era should feature those characters, since books 'out' of that era invariably won't. But none of this means that DR or some future publisher can't revisit a particular era and tell things from a different point of view (see Invasion). And as usual, I don't know that I 'buy' Sue's comment on viability - it took them 5 tales books to figure that out? I doubt it. But it's a convenient excuse (see also: why are there no more X-wing books).

Tales of the Empire and Tales of the New Republic weren't true "Tales of" books. They just existed to collect older short
stories, not to be a bastion for new content proliferated the first books.
That said, if Del Rey chose to excite hardback buyers by putting out a paperback that collected all the eBooks, I'd be thrilled. |

this is one of the books I was really looking forward to as well. I have always liked Zekk as a character (even during the Young Jedi Knights series) and
would really like to know what is going on with him and what happened to him. He has just all of a sudden disappeared and no one has even mentioned him in
FOTJ yet.

I wonder what Nom's going to think when this thread was bumped and nothing new...
Also, welcome DLZ! Jaina realized with a cold shudder that Jacen had not failed. He had sacrificed everything-his name, his family, his reputation, his life- to unite the
galaxy. And now here Jaina was, watching the birth of a galaxywide league of worlds dedicated to working together in peace. Had Jacen won after all?
