I also liked DJ - it was a good read. And awesome Max!

I've always been disappointed that DJ was looked at as one of the weaker NJO novels, but I loved every second of it, and I thought it was a very important book in the development of certain characters. Jaina and Jag aside, this was Kyp's shining book. All those people who cry about the lack of Kyp, Elaine Cunningham delievered with him. Not only that, I never ever thought I could like Kyp ever again after Rebirth, but Elaine made the impossible happen--I LOVED Kyp in Dark Journey. There were so many good things about Dark Journey that I have trouble remembering why people thought it was so bad; I guess the whole Ta Chume/Isolder/Jaina-manipulating thing turned people off, but I didn't see it as anything the Hapan royalty wouldn't try and pull. I also liked that it was more of a political intrigue-novel, rather than just a straight-up action book. Star By Star was a real doozy action-wise, and I thought DJ was a good, calmer follow-up to it. |

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't despise Dark Journey. I found it to have a number of drawbacks- being short and choppy, with apparently an
entire short story taking place in the middle of it for you to understand all of the details- but I loved Jaina dealing with her brother's death in exactly
the way that the spawn of Lord Vader and Han Solo would, plus the nobility of Tenel Ka and what is still my favorite visual rendering of my favorite Solo.
I think the main problem with it is that it, despite being heavy (or perhaps added to that), it is a very low action novels directly following one of the most furious ones in the series- it's like Jaina's Traitor. It would probably have been received much better if it had been halfway between hardcovers. About the actual book under discussion, Nom's idea is a possibility that intrigues me, but I find it unlikely. I am starting to think it is something like a pirate oath (Isolder?!) or some other bond of brotherhood.

Just to put in my 2 cents on Dark Journey and Elaine Cunningham. I read her short story in Star Wars Insider (still have it) that takes place in the middle of Dark Journey before reading the novel. I really enjoyed that short story. Unfortunately, it's THE most significant development in Jaina's turn to the dark side, and it's absent from the novel, and there's nothing else in the novel that really struck me as Jaina being on this dark path. It keeps getting SAID that she's turned dark, but very little of what she DID seemed that way. Mostly, she just seemed like an annoyed teenager. I'm no fan of Tenel Ka, the Hapans, Isolder, nor that whole society. Dark Journey takes place ONLY at Hapes as I recall. That said, I do recall that Jag came back in this book, Kyp was pretty awesome (when like our forumer Jaina, I didn't think I'd ever like him again after his betrayal of her in what, Ruin?) the funeral was good, I liked Luke's speech about Jaina... Often, when I don't like a novel, it's really because I just don't like the style of writing of the author. It doesn't mean I think she's a bad writer, her style just doesn't suit me well. I discovered this later, when I tried her Everquest novel The Blood Red Harp. I gave up half way through as I was tired of struggling to read it. I also discovered that when Denning writes the Hapans (Tempest) I actually enjoyed it. So, it's definately a 'style' thing. But maybe Nom's right - maybe this next novel by her will be an improvement - but it's going to take some time still for me to be convinced, and unless it's a novel I'm really dying to read, it may be awhile before I try it out (I'm looking at Reeves and his new SW trilogy, which I just have no interest in reading). That said, I like both the Wookie and Pirate ideas. I suppose the Noghri are a possibility as well (don't they have a kind of 'blood oath' to Leia). |

"Dark Journey"'s problem was having to come after "Star By Star." Almost any book short of "Traitor" would have been looked
upon as a dip in quality.

I don't really rank SbS that high in quality. I think a lot of people just like it because so much happens in it, and DJ operates on a far smaller stage
with less cast. Personally I prefer DJ and every other book in NJO and afterwards except Invincible over SbS. Because in the end I just don't care all that
much about quality, in reality I just want happy endings and near immortal characters, to speak the truth.

Blasphemy! Do you not like it because Anakin died?

I'm not gonna speculate on what this book will contain. I just like the title. Finally something different! No "dark" "jedi" or
"force."

*laughs to self* I'm getting the impression that Mr.Nom had a Dark Journey megathread back in the day. . .
Perhaps with Cunningham publishing another SW title, we'll get the short story released with Blood Oath. That would make me happy. It would also make me happy if one day I could read Red Star, Blue Flame (or whichever it's called) that's about Jag. I also approved of Dark Journey. Kyp = deserving of much applause.

"Dark Journey"'s problem was having to come after "Star By Star." Not for me because as Rogue points out... I don't really rank SbS that high in quality. Neither do I. It's not terrible by any means - but it's not close to my favorite NJO book. Do you not like it because Anakin died? That's one reason. I also personally find the descriptions messy. I still don't know if that final battle took place on a Vong ship in orbit around Myrkr or on the planet itself (a problem I found happened again in Dark Nest - I often had trouble following Denning's descriptions). Speaking of which... The Battle of Coruscant and Myrkr also takes place during the book.I thought those were only in Star by Star. |

Nah, part of the Battle of Coruscant is in the beginning of Dark Journey, too--Jaina in the ship she and the remaining strike team members escape in. They pop
up in Coruscant in the middle of the crap hitting the fan, Han makes a comment about only Jaina being able to make a rock perform like a Twi'lek dancer
(something to that effect)...

Lots of details are fine and a good thing in my opinion as long as the ending doesn't disappoint.
Coruscant fell to some extent because the NR was full of idiots. That's the problem to a large extent with the whole war - it looks like all NR needed to do to stop losing and to win the war was to change it's name and remove some idiots from the top. |

I meant the whole war in NJO, not just the part in SbS. In SbS idiocy just cost them especially dearly.
I would have preferred the YV to advance in NJO because they would have been just so powerful, not because NR leadership had other priorities. |

Not really, it was infuriating. At one point Leia threatened to commit a coup with the help of military if Borsk wouldn't do something and as much as I
like my SW to be democratic, I just wished then that she would do it. NR was really a case of - to use an old cliche - lions led by lambs until DW.

I especially loved the parts that had to do with Borsk and his government. They were so ignorant and corrupt that I found it extremely entertaining.
