Yeah, I fell for the "autographed copy of Invincible". That is how it was advertised. Nowhere that was perceptible with the human eye was there
anything that indicated that the book itself would not be signed. Everything in the wording of the advertising indicated it would be the book that was signed.
Rather than be the crackpot that sues Del Rey, I just chalked it up to experience. Not only will I never fall for that again but it will be a cold day in Hell
before I trust any promotion Del Rey holds beyond the simple sale of a book.
I was really pissed off about that. I usually try not to air such grievances in a public way but now that I've been reminded of it yet again, that was pretty weak.

What pissed me off even worse was that this was the official offer from Starwars.com. It really puts anything else I buy from there in the future in doubt.

Well we get excited to get autographs...We all have our reasons for a sighned something or another. It's too bad they don't do a better job with the
books.

I never get excited about author signed copies myself. The few times I could have gotten an autograph for any book I have deliberately shied away. I want to
keep a distance with the author and concentrate on the book. So, I guess these Starwars.com autographies would be perfect for me - if I would want
autographies.

This site I have noticed spends alot of time praising Authors and book companies....I figured there would be a better response to an autographed copy. It's
not like theses guys and gals are in the movies, But still...They are writing what this whole site represents. I agree not everybody values an autograph but
I'll still take a sighned copy any day over a non sighned. But, I'm also a huge collector and have many autographs in my collection.

The problem isn't with the offer, it's what the offer is described as being... an autographed copy of a book. Which it isn't.
It's an autographed sticky label that you can apply to the book, but you could easily keep it separate or stick it somewhere else. You're buying a book, and an autographed post-it. But they advertise it as an autographed book. I can get an autographed picture of Aaron Allston and stick it between two pages of Betrayal, but that doesn't make the boot autographed... it makes the picture. Not like the copy that Jaina got for me at ComicCon that has his handwriting on one of the first bound pages of the novel. Two different items, if you ask me.

Agreed, It is a more of a lame way...But in the end. An Autograph it is. Not everyone can get around to conventions or book sighnings.

Beg to differ, ramesses. Manchester United are imploding now

Off topic for sure

I never get excited about author signed copies myself. The few times I could have gotten an autograph for any book I have deliberately shied away. I want to keep a distance with the author and concentrate on the book. I feel the same way Rogue. I actually find I don't enjoy too much interaction with the authors of the books I love, because if they rub me the wrong way, I have trouble going back to read their future books. It's happened to me a few times, so now I just shy away from that kind of interaction.

Is Allston's heart condition going to result in pushing some release dates back? I imagine that he hasn't been doing any work, but then again I have no
idea how far along he's been with his writing.

According to his homepage, the last time it was updated, he was in the process of writing FotJ 4.
It might not be proper at this point to say this - because it depends so much on how good a recovery he can make, and what his doctors will tell him about returning to work - but there is the possibility that someone else will be recruited to finish FotJ 4 and perhaps also write FotJ 7 if it looks like they would have to push pack FotJ 4 and the novels after it significantly. |

It shouldn't. Now I have heard conflicting reports on this and maybe Uliah could shed some light on this. But two people who saw Aaron on his tour said
that he was working on his third book for FotJ, so the seventh novel in the series, and one other said he was working/ finishing Backlash. His own site lists that he is working on Backlash in the current projects section so I'm more inclined to
believe that. But there shouldn't be much of a delay at all if any.

Total speculaion here.
I would think Backlash was very close to being finished. I'm not sure if I ever knew what typical publisher's schedules are, but there's editing that needs to be done, ARCs that need to be published, and the final book that needs to be sent to the printer. 6 months out is probably fair, which is June, which isn't very far away. So I would think he was almost done with that book. It could still be done in time. I'm sure that there have been closer calls (frankly, we know there have been on some Star Wars books, manuscripts delivered only a couple of months before publication) - but if they need to push things out a bit because he needs time to recover, they have some wiggle room. Karen Miller's Clone Wars book is done I believe - I think she's just adding some finishing touches or something. Her book wasn't due out until March 2010. So they could flip-flop that book with Allston's Backlash (which is due Jan 2010) and still have it out before Golden's FotJ #5 (due April 2010). It's not ideal, but it could be done that way. It could also have a ripple effect and push out other FotJ books and pull up other Star Wars books (to give Allston time to catch up) - but the further out we go, the less likely it's going to really be a problem. Assuming Allston makes a full recovery (and indications seem to be positive) there's no reason I can think of that he shouldn't be able to continue with his books in FotJ - but then, only he can really make that call. I would suspect Del Rey would be far more likely to leave it up to Allston than to decide to replace him so they can keep to the schedule - they're constantly updating the schedule and it's because of things like this. Life happens sometimes and you adjust to it - Stover had problems getting out Shadows of Mindor, so they adjusted the schedule. I'd think in a 'worst' case scenerio Del Rey might shuffle the order of the authors for the last three books, putting Allston last and thereby giving him more time, but again, it's so far off, I doubt that would be the choice (and that's not taking into consideration that each author probably knows what their general plans are for each book, and that puts a whole new snag in it). Far more likely, if any change needs to be made, it'll be a delay in the schedule. But that's just my thoughts.
