This semester, I am taking two film classes (one film production, another film analysis) and they are taught by the same teacher, a recent alum of the New
York University Film School. He worked at New Line Cinema for about a year and is now a director for his own film. In short, he knows films fairly well.
On occasion, then I have conversed with him about what he thinks about the Star Wars series. He is like a lot people, a great fan of the OT and disappointed in
the PT. That being said, he did mention one possibility that the prequels presented that he though was quite interesting. For your perusing pleasure, I will
post the sum of his theory here.
Traditionally, the OT is considered the saga of Luke, and the PT and the OT considered the Rise, Fall and Redemption of Vader. But my teacher noticed another
possibility.
Episode I: Qui-Gon teachs Obi-Wan
Episode II: We learn that Yoda taught Dooku, and that Dooku taught Qui-Gon
Episode IV: Obi-Wan teaches Luke
Episode V: Yoda teachs Luke
Episode VI: Luke redeems Anakin Skywalker.
So we have a chain: Yoda to Dooku to Qui-gon to Obi-Wan to Anakin to Luke.
Perhaps the two trilogies are about the Fall and Redemption of Yoda through the Skywalker family. Anakin's training can be linked back to Yoda so one could
argue that Yoda contributed to the creation of the Empire and Darth Vader (Not to say that he is primarily responsible). In ANH and ESB, it could be argued
that Yoda redeems himself by training Luke to defeat the Empire.
And just to add an EU link (my teacher is not an EU reader), we also know that Luke teaches Jacen Solo who becomes Caedus. Once again, the link exists,
regardless of its strength.
So while this is probably not the most important way to look at the Star Wars movies, it does provide another lens through which to look.
