It's on the time of Morgoth, before the creation of the rings of power and all that (Sauron was one of Morgoth's minions, so it's well before Sauron was known as a "Dark Lord") it's more of a narative than an actual novel, it'll go through some parts more detailed but it's telling the story rather than.. experiencing it as the characters go through it. it has character developement as it mainly follows the story of Turin, the son of Hurin, and then also will go back and talk about his sister and family as well as several other sub-plots. The book ends up developing the characters rather well i thought, but since it goes through part of Hurin's life as well as going through Turin's entire life as well as all the connections it doesn't explain everything in absolute detail, like it doesn't detail full conversations or insignificant events but tells of smaller stoies in lighter detail and then more important events will be written out in full with characters' speeches etc. on the whole i found it an awesome read. actually now that i think about it i'd say that the best way to describe how it's writen is that it's just like how a bard, or story-teller would tell it, or something along those lines.
