Well, I went into this not expecting it to be a grandiose affair and so I was more than satisfied in that regard.

I went to this movie for four reasons: Mulder, Scully, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

In regards to those four reasons, I was astounded that even after all this time, those four STILL HAVE IT.

Duchovny and Anderson still have that inexplicable chemistry that made them one of TV's most famous couples for the majority of the 1990s. The relationship between the two has changed in the real time since the show ended in 2002, but it still has that spark, that connection, that comforts me.

I went to this movie for them only, and so I was less concerned with the X-File or mythology as I just wanted to see Mulder and Scully again.

I also was not expecting to see Skinner at all, so when they were all, "Scully called in a favour from a bigshot in the FBI" and BAM we saw the back of Mitch Pileggi's bald head, I did imaginery cartwheels in my head. That was a treat, although I do wish they had far more for him to do.

The X-File itself was promised to us to be something akin to the show's first few seasons, and in that regard, it did deliver. It was kooky. It was strange. It was frightening. Yet it was somewhat plausible and indeed in Russia in real life, they have done experiments like this (not with humans). I guess in a sense, I wanted MORE, especially once we actually did get a cohesive picture of what the X-File actually entailed.

I also loved how Samatha is to Mulder what William is to Scully, and the parallels each character made. I did want a few more tangible details of what actually happened between the finale and this film, as it seemed to be like Scully had no issue running around being a doctor (and how rewarding was it that she has actually become a proper practicing doctor) when the series told us that she was just as a much a target of the conspiracy a Mulder was.

I also found the reason for calling Mulder back in a little dubious. Just where were Doggett and Reyes, both of whom were NOT wanted by the FBI and NOT forced to go on the lam.

So in terms of Mulder + Scully, I got far more out of this film that I intended, and that was great.

X-File itself was pretty darn scary, but the reveal was all too quick, and I was like, "Er... need time to compute."

Shaky set-up in terms of getting Mulder back into the game and how the FBI would suddenly just drop everything.

Overall, quite better than my initial expectations, though I wouldn't go out of my way to buy the DVD.
