Just got back from a second time... here are a few thoughts - again it's later, but earlier than before.


S P O I L E R S, if it weren't obvious



Cons:
-The first part dragged on... after Singapore and before the Bretheren Court, it could have moved along a bit.

-Would have been nice to explore the Pirate Lords a bit more. Have them mean something more than just comic figures. Not that I disliked them as comic figures.

-The final battle, while amazing, was only between two ships. ALL those pirates and that huge armada and it never got messy, it never got intertwined and got everyone involved, but I suppose that's a logistical nightmare, not just for shooting and filming, but for real life pirates - it'd be such close quarters with that many ships.

That said, and skipping the obvious comments about how Pirates are awesome and the effects were amazing (but it was ILM; can you blame them?), I think the real prize of this movie is that it's just damn good story telling. Every character had their own complicated motivations, most of which conflicted with every other character. And all of them were unique. I don't think anyone could have watched the first film or even the second film and predicted where/how the characters would end up... Elizabeth a Pirate King? Will Turner as Captain of the Flying Duchman? The list goes on, but all of the mains - and even some of the supporting characters - got much deserved wrapping ups to their respective arcs while still leaving the door wide open on all those still alive (or immortal, in Will's case) to continue on.

And Hans Zimmer is a freaking genius. I don't think anything more needs said about that.

See other people have said this too, but I had no problem following the plot... I thought it was pretty clear. *shrug*

And it's one of the best music tracks, too - especially in combination with the visuals. I love memorizing soundtracks before I see the movie and then the first time I listen to them after seeing the movie is a completely different experience - it's fantastic. Highlights of that part are Jack getting everyone involved with his "Lookit that.... whoa" back and forth and then I know this is weird, but I laughed in every wide shot as Tia Dalma was running from side to side and had to pick up her dress to run. It's not funny... but I found it hillarious.

Which brings up a sidenote, that I wish we could get a whole movie about her (obviously a prequel) - she was just this weird background character in Dead Man's Chest, but became really three dimensional now - one of the more fascinating characters in this film, in my opinion. The actress (I never caught her name) was miles above what I was expecting of her.

OMG... flippin awesome - I got major goosebumps both times. I've tempted the idea of buying a ticket for the movie and then jumping from theater to theater to watch the last hour over and over.

Meh; didn't bother me. I actually thought it was good writing that helped dove-tail the two story lines a little.

And speaking of kitsch, what was up with that marriage scene? I saw the necessity, but was it really necessary to do it in the middle of a battle? I cringed throughout that entire sequence of slash-line-hack-line-spinning cut-line-kiss. It just seemed so unnecessarily campy. The scene between Will and Elizabeth at the end got the point across more effectively than that.

Meh; I thought it was, again, pretty damn awesome. Yes, a little over-used throughout similar based genres, but very enjoyable. The only part I didn't care for was that some of the sword fighting was a little too choreographed (such as Barbosa moving his sword from the left to the right when he's on the podium-thingy for a guy on either side. If either of them were smart one would jump back and let Barbosa focus his attention on the other as a distraction). This was another giant goosebump scene that I especially got the second time - the first it was caught off guard, marveling in the "coolness" of the sequence; the second time I knew it was coming and was better able to immerse myself in the characters and (especially) the music - I'd just listened that track before we went into the theater so I was listening for it and listening for specific parts of the cue. I absolutely LOVE that right before they kiss, Will and Elizabeth go to strike toward each other and their swords meet. I thought it was amazing.

But do you need to really show/focus on it? Just having them in the background fighting while the Pearl and the Duchman were in the whirlpool would have been enough for me. Just to know that while, yes, our attention is focused on the heroes fight, everyone else isn't just sitting around.

Although, who knows... I'm sure people would have complained because they wouldn't have been able to see any of the battle; given the complaints I've seen about how people were upset that the killing of the Kracken happened off screen (again, something that I thought worked perfectly well being off screen because it wasn't necessary to see it happen, but it was a great method to get Jack to snap out of things, if just for a moment) I guess people will complain about anything.

Meh; it shouldn't be too hard. Come up with a villianous character that just happens to be at the fountain of youth, also trying to take it over, and he does a big massacre of people... bam... Willy Turner has to show up to guide them away, in the process running into Jack & co.

Alternatively it might be fun (and a change from the formula) if there isn't a villian per s, but just Jack and Barbosa calling in favors, trying to outwit each other... a competition where each is trying to get to the fountain first.


Here's something to ask: would you all rather see another run where the story unfolds over multiple movies or single movie stories?

I appreciated the epicness of At World's End - that required the setup from Dead Man's Chest, but personally I'd rather see it done more ala Khan-Spock-Voyage Home was... it was still an overall trilogy (although that's hard to believe if you look just at Voyage home!), but each movie was clearly self contained and just led into the others, not so clearly of a "part 1" and "part 2".

This DVD is rather unimpressive. Disney made quite a bit of tout over the special limited edition 2-disc DVD...

The 2nd disc lacks a *lot* of content and is nothing compared to the special features that other films are putting out now-adays. And the features that are there aren't all that interesting/pretty weak.

The biggest disappointment, though? Lack of Director (or any) commentary on the actual movie. That's very disappointing.

Clearly they're holding out for what I'd guess will be some massive release of all 3 films where nothing new is presented for the first two films, and you get additional stuff for the 3rd film while gimmicking you into re-buying the first two.

Or else they're going to put all the features on the BlueRay or HD (whichever format Disney has chosen to back) release to pump next gen.
