Posts: 32 05/31/09 1:59 AM	I may have misunderstood some of the extra-galactic travel theory of NJO but didnt the Vong travel through the barriers at realspace speeds and not attempting hyperspace - that would be why it took centuries (possibly millenia - though i remember a reference to a vong ship in KOTOR 2) I figured this would be much the same for Outbound Flight - that they had families to colonize and eventually pass on the ship - even with C'Baoth inisting on Jedi training for suitable candidates - so that future generations might see the next galaxy even if they didn't The other theory (I believe postulated by Danni Quee in VP) is that the hyperspacial distortions blocking extragalactic travel could have been like a storm raging for an amount of time which then dies down over time to allow travel? Is it also possible that the YV found an area of space that allowed entry to the the SW galaxy as opposed to say the destination Outbound FLight had chosen?

It could indeed be the answer to the question. Is it also possible that the YV found an area of space that allowed entry to the the SW galaxy as opposed to say the destination Outbound FLight had chosen? This is feasible, yet they mention how scientists/astrophysicists have studied the barrier and found it borders the entire galaxy, though it is quite feasible that there are one or two small spots where the barrier does not cover.

Posts: 561 05/31/09 7:25 AM	If there is one hole in the barrier then it is conceivable that there would be many. I did have a random thought though. If it does happen before Legacy, then it could be a solo that does it and so explains why we haven't seen any.

Posts: 2202 05/31/09 8:58 AM	I've always liked this idea. In general, this is one of the areas I think the Star Wars lit folks should copy a little of the Trek lit line. They need more 'continuing series' set in different areas of space and different time periods. The only real consistant story we get is the progression of the 'big three' past RotJ. Anything else is a side story, mostly one-off. X-wing and Rep Com being larger exceptions - but they're also good examples of what they could be doing elsewhere as well. A 'tales/kotor era' continuing series, new heroes, new villains, etc. The same goes with this Outbound Flight II idea - use some secondary characters that never get enough screen time in the lit books devoted to the story of the big three - follow the path of the Vong. Vong battles, a desolated galaxy that the Jedi can help to repair. Maybe find a way to tie it into what happens to the Vong in Legacy. And yes, like Andy, I thought of the idea of a Solo being a part of that expedition. But it's not a bad idea - and yeah, sure there's lots of stories that could still be told in the SW galaxy - but there's nothing wrong with branching out as well. I'd like to see them go in lots of directions. You are greater than the Jedi of former days. Because unlike the Knights of old, Jedi Luke Skywalker... You are not afraid of the dark.

Posts: 4133 05/31/09 10:24 AM	I always thought that the barrier around galaxies preventing or at least hindering travel out of it was a real scientific concept, but I can't find any mention of it IRL with some quick research. So it looks like it's exclusively Star Wars. That said, there is a barrier around the SW galaxy. As somebody said before, the Vong were able to exploit a hole in the barrier, "Vector Prime," to get in. Now regarding the question of multiple holes...we know that the Vong entered the galaxy via VP, which put them someplace near Belkadan and Helska, which are on the edge of the same side of the galaxy as planets such as Dubrillion and Kashyyyk. There was also that mention in KOTOR I by Canderous Ordo where he mentioned strange flying asteroids in the Crispin system. I don't know where the Crispin system is, but if it's significantly far away from VP, then that appearance lends credence to multiple holes. Bear in mind, though, that once the Vong were in the galaxy, they probably could have used hyperspace travel. But they also probably skirted the edges of the galaxy to avoid contact with most beings; everywhere they appeared; VP, Unknown Regions, Crispin, are all said to be on the fringes. he vong attacking the chiss would have come in at differnt points to the ones attacking the new republic and the fleets that entered the new repbulic surely didnt enter all at the same point The evidence we have points to entry at the same point; Vector Prime. If we look at the YV's invasion corridor, it started at one edge of the galaxy and drove Coreward. If they'd had another point of entry that was farther away, I'm sure they would have used it to open another front. Personally, I would love to see intergalactic travel in SW. Del Rey has done a good job of keeping their stories relatively fresh, but it would be cool to see people figure out how to cross the intergalactic barrier and go exploring. Maybe that arc could run concurrently with others dealing with events back home. There's no reason why coverage should stop inside the galaxy we all know and love. It would also be interesting to see the social dynamics of discovering another galaxy out there, populated and developed like the SW one is. Would something like that unify the galaxy? Would people be xenophobic and try to wipe out the other galaxy? It opens up a can of worms, true, but it's an exciting can. Posts: 5337 05/31/09 10:54 AM	You forgot about the Vong scouting party incursion into the galaxy in the OJO when they discovered Zonoma Sekot. It doesn't say where in the galaxy ZS was except that it was very hard to find. ZS must have been close to the Unknown Regions then. And ST also used the idea of a galactic barrier that prevented exploration beyond its borders. -- although they did have extra-galactic beings coming in as well.

Posts: 325 05/31/09 7:55 PM	Just because there is still some territory left to see in the GFFA there's still no reason why the Skywalker/Solo family or the Jedi Order can't have adventures in other galaxies and encouter not only new worlds and other lifeforms but new force sensetive beings to increase the Jedi Order but to find other galactic governments as I've been saying earlier and to encouter an intergalactic republic waiting for the GFFA to make peace with ifself and become part of the integalactic community and for the Jedi to become ambassadors and represenitives of the GFFA and have intergalctic wars which I think would be more spectacular and better than simply wars in one galaxy. Didn't in the last two books of the Skylark of Space series by E.E. Doc Smith the heroes have adventures in other galaxies beyond their own. I think they should do the same for SW novels post-FOTJ. If there is to be post-FOTJ novels. I think that if in FOTJ there won't be a return to the Unknown Regions. The next 9-book series after FOTJ(if it will be 9 books) should deal with all out war in the Unknown Regions with the Big 3,Ben Skywalker,Jaina and Allana Solo,Jagged Fel and the New Jedi Order taking part in this war helping the Chiss and the Empire of the Hand coming back while the Jedi spread out into the UR building new colonies there while a breakthrough in much faster hyperdrives for rapid intergalactic travel is made making travel to other galaxies take weeks or months instead of 50 years. A second 9-book series after FOTJ could deal with the Big 3,Ben Skywalker,Jaina and Allana Solo and Jagged Fel even the Chiss and the Mandalorians using new spacecraft with the more advamced hyperdrives while Han Solo's Falcon could be upgraded with the new hyperdrive and have adventures in another or maybe several other galaxies. It worked in Skylark of Space and the Lensmen and Green Lantern and sometimes in Star Trek. COME ON STAR WARS LET'S GO TO THE OTHER GALAXIES FAR,FAR AWAY.... YOU'RE A SPACE OPERA TOO FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!!!

I think Star Wars knows its a space opera and I think the teams behind the franchise do as well. There's plenty of opera left in the space of the GFFA. Obviously, the authors and editors still believe there are plenty of stories left to be told right where the characters are now thank you very much, and I agree with them. Perhaps they are of the opinion that something like an Outbound Flight 2 would, in-universe cost money, and there's also the issue of finding people to crew it. Sure, you'll say, they had people to crew the last one. They were different times. I think that a lot of people want to stay at home and rebuild after the half a dozen or so wars that have come and gone. While there may actually be people that want to do the opposite and leave their warmongering galaxy behind, there's still the issue of funding, and conmstruction materials and getting supplies and stuff. And since the only real feasible options for where the funding would come from are places like the budget of the Galactic Alliance or Imperial Remnant, I don't think it will happen anytime soon. Their finances are going into reconstruction efforts.

Posts: 36 06/01/09 2:53 AM	Plus I think we forget that their galaxy comprises of hundreds of thousands of star systems (no idea how may support life) and possibly millions of planets. There's plenty of scope for someone to stumble accross a species or planet that's never reached hyperspacial travel tech so have never left their own planet. As Omen is going to show, an entire planet of sith has been lurking somewhere for five thousands of years. So really if we need new allies/ememies/species etc I really think the authors can invent a previously unheard set of planets to give us some new territory. There's also the issue of things like the Celestials or Builders - mysteries that may one day be addressed (personally I like the mystery and wouldn't be keen top have it unravelled.

Posts: 37 06/01/09 2:58 AM	As to the Unkown Regions I wouldn't be fussed about the big three heading there - I dont think they will, I dont think a reasonable explanation could be found for it. However wouldn't it be more interesting if a few of the lesser used characters (say Lowie Tesar and another Master - presuming these guys get bumped upto master which must happen soon) had a separate series (maybe a trilogy) dealing with them venturing out into the galaxy perhaps bringing back the Jedi Watchmen or even to seek out new force sensitives etc. Timeline wiese it could run concurrently with any other series whislt avoiding using the big three or their descendants so that nothing is fixed by Legacy. Personally I'm loving the idea of a wookiee and a Barabel wandering the galaxy, encountering new allies, smacking the snot out of any new enemies on the way. Regardless of who they use, a series not focusing directly on the skywalkers and their immediate circle would be a breath of fresh air for me If anyone does ever head to the UR I want them to track down the potential Jedi that Luke found mention of in the Chiss Library (I think she escaped the purge and ended up as a kind of benevolent ruler of the natives - that would be worth a follow up IMO.

I just want intergalactic travel in the GFFA and the GFFA meeting governments of other galaxies to happen eventually because: a) Intergalactic travel and meeting new intergalactic governments/allies/enemies could change the face of SW EU as we know it. b)There would be no shortage of new ideas. c)It would make the action scenes/space battles more spectacular to read about and imagine. And by the way there was that mention of the dark side sect in the UR in Shadows of Mindor. Luke,Han,Leia,Jaina,Allana and Ben and the Jedi Order should go to the UR to investigate if it's true in FOTJ if not post-FOTJ. And find the Jedi that Luke read about in the Chiss library.
