Without knowing what really goes on behind the scenes and whether or not there really is bad blood between Del Rey and Dark Horse, I will state that some of my problems for Invincible in particular came from the hasty and totally out-of-the-blue Legacy tie-ins.

Exhibit A: Quick as a flash, Jagged Fel goes from being an awesomely bearded grunge civilian working for the Jedi to Super-Duper Grand Moff of Moffs just because Luke Skywalker told him to. All hail Emperor Fel 1!!

Exhibit B: Wondered how that Imperial Mission came about? Well, Han Solo randomly told the Imperial Moffs to set one up when he thought his granddaughter had died. Doesn't matter that it was totally random and quite out of Han's character, but let's just do it!

Whatever.

But it isn't just this. Personally, a lot of my problems in dealing with LOTF came from the assassination of one of my personal fave characters just because they needed a Sith Lord, intra-book wonky continuity, Fandalorian worship that took far too long to tie into ANY OTHER PLOT, characters acting so far out of character that it just looked like shite, and an erosian of anything resembling any sort of cohesive and satisying conclusion after so much awesome build-up.

Whether or not this actually does have anything to do with Del Rey saying "ZOMG, we need to quickly establish some ties to the future in Legacy because we've neglected it too long! ZOMG, anything goes" I don't really know and can't speculate, but if this IS the case, then its their own fault for not thinking it through, and the casualties are continuity, characterisation, sense and us.

And what the hell was the point of White Eyes and his Sith? A "cute" precursor to Krayt? I don't know, but it appears like my theory of White Eyes = Cronal is fast approaching critical mass and will explode and that little plot sojourn makes even less sense now because Alema was the only one who knew and she is dead.

I would've also liked some sort of resolution to the Antilles family and why did it seem to me (though I could be imagining it) that poor Allston's contributions to the series had zero to do with its conclusion.

I'm quite happy with LOTF 1 - 7. The potential there was amazing and we truly did get some decent and memorable pieces of characterisation, plot and theme, even if Jacen was a Snideley Whiplash through all this and got assassinated, a lot of other things were great. It is the final two books where all semblance of anything cohesive, exciting and decent went out the window quicker than Naboo wildlife fleeing invading Trade Federation forces.

Again, this may or may not have something to do with Legacy/Dark Horse but I personally feel it is more the staff of Del Rey not being able to agree on anything. Just look at the author interviews:

Denning: Han and Leia did as best they could with their children.
Traviss: I'm surprised the three Solo children were not put into foster care as soon as Leia gave birth.
Allston: Er... no comment.

Traviss: Jacen is a jerk.
Denning: Jacen was going dark since TUF.
Rostoni: Insert vague ambiguous comments here that don't really mean anything.

Denning: Jacen going dark is the backbone of this series.
Traviss: MANDALORIANS!!
Shapiro/Rostoni: Okay.

Perhaps my anger is clouding what I'm saying, but from the author interviews/comments we've been privy to, they don't seem to have much consensus on what they're doing. Meanwhile, everyone at Dark Horse seems to be on the same page, and make concessions and compromises for each other's pet wants for the story without overriding the overall structure and brilliance of the story.

I do think there may be some reticence on the part of Del Rey about perhaps wondering whether or not they should be bringing more things into sync with Legacy but this should not seriously render their own storytelling ability to the point of them being so afraid to do nothing at all, or as we've seen make hasty jumps to link to Legacy which make no sense at all.

Perhaps instead of claiming all through LOTF that "Apart from notifying each other of major plot points but basically just not meshing anything together at all" they should have thought it through more.

I don't know, I'm not privy to anything that goes on at Del Rey or Dark Horse, and they certainly don't seem to be in the mind to enlighten us in any fashion. So it's hard to say with certainty. I don't think a case of "It's all Dark Horse's fault for not making Legacy occur later in the timeline" does fly, nor does it really make logical sense. Del Rey through LucasFilm have access to everything that is happening in Legacy and I am sure if they were really against something, they'd only have to suggest some sort of team-talk with Dark Horse to work out something that is feasible to all.

I just think it is a case of them (Del Rey) either thinking things will work when they won't, or they misjudged what we wanted, or their in-house co-ordination and communication was crap, or they aren't giving the authors and editors enough time to edit and truly read their own stories before publication or all of the above.
