This movie isn't either of those... This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and I love it.
I love how it handle the whole concept of Batman. This film, more than any other, really gets how a real world would react to costumed characters. I'd say the all the incidental characters and extras play their roles pitch perfect in making this film about more than just the hero and the villain. This isn't Superhero vs. Supervillain. This is law vs. crime, order vs. chaos, man vs. satan.
That's who the Joker is in this movie: Satan. A pure anarchist. He's not out to rule the city, or hold the world ransom for a billion dollars... he's doing what he does for the his own sick sense of enjoyment. He gets off on the corruption of man, on the destruction of normalcy and the death of nobility. I don't think i really need to say much about how Heath Ledger was in this. You've probably heard it by now. All I can tell you is that it's that good. I honestly forgot it was him...
Now, our three main protagonists in this movie are undoubtedly Batman/Bruce Wayne (as to be expected), Jim Gordon (his accomplice on the police force.) and Harvey Dent (a bright shining example of nobility, who happens to be the District Attourney.)
I daresay the story revolves around Dent. He's the macguffin. And that really makes it hard to talk about him without spoiling the movie. I will say that Aaron Eckhart put in an excellent performance as Dent.
Bale as Batman... well, I've always said that when it comes down to it, Batman is Batman, and the only real difference between the men who play him is how they handle his alter ego, Bruce Wayne. In which case, he plays all the sides of him almost just right.
He has to diguise his voice as Batman, and he has to disguise his personality as a "trust fund billionaire" Bruce Wayne. And only a select few characters through the film know the real Bruce.
And now we come to Jim Gordon. He's alwyas been a favorite character of mine, and I've always been disappointed with Pat whatshisname who played him in the old series. But in this series, Jim is the man. He's one of the most important characters in this new series. Gary Oldman is pure awesome as it is, but I've never seen him get a character so right as he has in these films. I'm glad to see the character done justice, I really am.
And finally, I'm glad to see a movie finally excede it's hype. Not only did it meet the expectations of fanboys, but it delivered a story that is bound to be an all time great... a story of love and loss, of terror and hope... a successful crime drama that just happened to have a man in a Bat suit and a psycho dressed like a clown.
6/5 stars... A+++.
