But it's not like they should be able to expect to be protected from criticism through the self-censorship of their readers. That does not mean people should say that they should rot in Hell, or say "F U!" to them. That's not simple criticism - that's a horrible thing to say. Posts: 1971 06/10/08 7:26 PM	Reading or hearing such things about oneself is not a nice experience, but like I wrote, most people just have to move on when coming face with such things, instead of acting like a pampered diva. And if one person in a forum writes such a thing about an author, then refusing an interview with that site because of that is childish. The fan sites don't have an obligation to protect Denning's feelings, especially as interviews like these are a way to market his novel. Would he boycott a bookshop in the future if some customer there would act disrespectively towards him during a book signing, for example? He shouldn't, because a bookshop or a website don't have an obligation to protect him from criticism. They both are helping him to market his work. Making him feel good shouldn't be part of the deal with him.

Posts: 1973 06/10/08 7:40 PM	I have gotten my share of negative views about my work and it has sometimes gotten personal. But it's something that one mostly has to just accept and move on. Or change a job etc. It's not that famous people don't have feelings, they just tend to act like their feelings are more important than those of ordinary people, that because they are famous they must not be treated like ordinary people. I do think that VIPs in forums should be treated more carefully than ordinary posters and that in this case all people should not be equal, but the VIPs should also accept even strong criticism towards their work and occasional remarks that might not be too polite. They should move on, instead of being petty and trying to revenge the bad treatment to all people on who visite the site - not to speak of the site's owners or moderators who have usually asked them to participate, thus offering the VIPs a change to market their work, and who are not able to dictate how all the people who post to the forum behave. One can't ban person before an offending post has been posted and seen, after all.

I certainly hope I am misinterpreting this statement. Everyone is equal, no matter what's going on. And if I ever became an author and people said things like THIS about me, I would certainly be upset.
