That was a fun ride.
I hope to go again to see whether some of the dragging I felt was due to the movie or the lateness in the time.
Great humor, great visuals, *great* MacGuffin... I'd just watched a Sci-Fi channel documentary on the skulls and everything tied in so well - I completely bought it.
I'm an Indy nut, and I went with a friend who has seen the films and another who hasn't and they all enjoyed the film. Apparently it ranks below the other 3, for my friend who's seen them - probably mostly to do with the alien ship at the end which I thought was pretty wicked cool, although a little out of place for an Indy film... but when you think about the B-movies of the 1950s that it's supposed to resemble, it fits. I loved all the throw-aways for those people who have seen the films but they aren't too over the top for people who haven't... Indy afraid of snakes, seeing the Ark (however briefly)... etc.
It's great to see a wise-cracking hero who can get hurt but also offers a load of a punch. "By the way you're sinking your teeth into those double-u's... " hahah.
The ants freaked me out, but very Indiana Jones-ish. "Big damn ants... run!"
Shia worked wonderfully - I want to see more movies of Mutt now. Marian seemed forced... at least... the marriage at the end did - I felt like their relationship rekindled out of nowhere, but he offered some very touching lines about how the other women "weren't you."
The visual style of the film was amazing - I loved the look of the shots, especially the stuff in Nevada - gorgeous.
Blanchete's Colonel Dr. Irina Sparko (or however it's spelled) was fantastic - a great and intriguing villian.
Some things did seem a little forced... the weird jet engine thing that Indy rode? Where'd that come from? What was the purpose? What was up with that entire lab to begin with? Just some weird government lab underneath the military complex? But for the most part, it all flowed very nicely.
I'm ready for an Indy 5.

. Loved how they threw that bit of social history in the movie...and the red
scare. Touched up on it without being preachy.
