Mainly Nom's responses to a book we will remember not to mention here prompted me to do this.
Admiral Daala.
A mistreated Caridan cadet.
A talented tactician who was banished to obscurity due to her gender.
A misguided believer who allowed her belief in Tarkin's infallibity to cost her her first battle in a decade.
A fanatic who will destroy everything for the Imperial cause.
A cynic who no longer believes in the Empire itself.
A friend of Grand Admiral Pellaeon.
A hero who aided Niathal's coalition.
Which of these descriptions stands out to you as who Natasi Daala truly is? Why?

A fanatic who will destroy everything for the Imperial cause.
Despite her appearances in both "Death Star" and the later "Legacy of the Force" books, none have truly focused on her like the "Jedi Academy" trilogy. In an age when she was an over-the-top cookie-cutter villain, she stood out as one of the zaniest. Perhaps what we are seeing is now an attempt to reign her character into a more believable tone, and to shave off some of the KJA-simplified elements, but I enjoyed her as a crazy loser villain, and that's how I'll always remember of her.

same as boba kareu but i think she truely was a friend of pellaeon she didnt have to come back to him when he called her but she chose to

To me she is and will be a villain and a war criminal. Of course, human too, but so was Palpatine...

I think Revelation showed she's still a brilliant but crazy loose cannon. She came back to help Palleaon not just because she admired him, but in order to
get at the Moffs who'd killed the man she loved. This woman is very much about retribution. I think she's just learned to serve it up cold, unlike when
we first met her.
And I don't like her attitude about Jedi. I think she's really dangerous to the Jedi & I'm wondering how she's going to play out in the long term. |

When I personally think Daala, I think of her as the best thing to ever come out of Darksaber. By unifying the Empire and restoring Pellaeon to his position as
second in command, Daala proved herself the greatest living threat to the New Republic- though her luck was about as good as Darth Caedus's when it came to
battles involving the Jedi.

Daala did terrible things- dreadful things. But I think that she has...mellowed in her later years. I don't view her as a Hero, but I don't view her as
a villain. It is difficult to really place her under a category, since she is so far out from everybody else.

*Loves to gas Moffs. *Plays the "I'm a girl in a man's world and am so undersppreciated" card a little too often. Did Princess Leia bemoan that she has breasts instead of a twig and berries? No, she forcefully grabbed that blaster, shot some stormtroopers, took over her own rescue and even verbally abused a Wookiee. Without losing her femininity. Natasi Daala, take note! *Makes fun of Sullustans and then blows them up, and then attacks civilian cities. And completely destroys them. *Desires to take the Sun Crusher and blow up every single solar system in the New Republic. Genocidal much? *Attacks a monastery of novice Force-users and kills some of them. *Gets totally pwzzzned by a one-woman SSD wrecking crew in the form of Callista Ming, but then pulls a rabbit out of a hat and scoots back to Remnant territory. *Is a beserker wild rabid nek dog. *Rams Garm Bel Iblis' ship and flees off into hyperspace, perhaps locating Nil Spaar. *Appears out of nowhere a decade and a half or so later STILL attempting to massacre Moffs and Jedi, having boinked Fett, apparently and inexplicably ends up a lot better off than other characters. FOR NO REASON. I can bullshit and shenanigans at the same time. I'm all for Daala being a villain. But anything else? Nope, does not compute. |

Personally, I'll always see her as a villian, and not a very good one at that.

Until you see this Legacy Books forum peppered with Invincible spoiler threads that already have a gazillion posts in them, then the spoiler ban is still in effect. It's hard to say whether Daala should still be considered a villian. She's definitely far from being considered a hero, but like Vader there is still good in her to where she might redeem herself. She's definitely, in my opinion anyways, a sweetheart compared to Ysanne Isard. |

She's definitely, in my opinion anyways, a sweetheart compared to Ysanne Isard.I have to say I agree. The problem with Daala isn't that she was bad then or good now. It's that we didn't see the actual transformation between the two take place. If she has reformed, and I don't think there's really enough information to say either way here, it's hard for the reader to take it seriously. It would have been the same thing if Palpatine hadn't died in RotJ - but went off into exile, only to return twenty years later and declare himself to no longer be evil. Yes, Daala used her resources to help the GA and was essentially on the side of good in the latter half of LotF, but the reader is left questioning her motives because we don't really know what happened to her during her self imposed exile. It's very possible that her return and "mellowing out" were not merely products of Pellaeon calling in a favor, but were in fact part of a plan to gain a position of power in the GA. Or, she may have truly changed and only wants to help the galaxy rebuild and restore peace. Isard is a good example of the former. She too claimed to have benign intentions, but it was all in fact an elaborate revenge plot. Right now, at least to me, it's really up in the air as what she will become in the future. Redemtion is a cornerstone of Star Wars and I don't think I'm overstating things to say that even someone as twisted as Daala could be redeemed. Vader probably commited more evil acts than she ever did, but he came back. We took the redemption of Anakin Skywalker at face value because we saw it. There's no gray area there. Unfortantely, the same can't be said for Daala. |

Daala is just one of those characters that does whatever it takes to reach her goals. Even if it means working with her enemies or killing thousands, or saving
thousands. As long as she reaches her goals.

The citizens of Mon Calamari shake their heads in disbelief.
And the ghost of Dorsk 81 balks in horror. She can't be "good" now, when she's plotting for a galaxy that doesn't have Jedi. She can't be good when she shows up out of nowhere after a decade and a half with apparently no reason to return except that Pellaeon asked and one of the first things she does is say she wants to kill all Moffs in revenge for one of their botched attacks on her that claimed Liegeus. These things do not a hero make. She isn't even an anti-hero. She's... a menace. |

I'm definitely not saying she's good now. I'm saying we don't really know what she is, because we don't know what her true motivations are.
But still, there does exist at least the possibilty that she has been redeemed. The best example continues to be Anakin Skywalker - I'm sure Vader's victims were shaking their heads (assuming they still had them) when Luke was telling Leia "there's still good in him" etc. But I do get your point - it doesn't make sense to me personally that Daala would be considered good by anyone in the GA. They certainly shouldn't have forgotten the crimes she has committed.

less about redemption. She came in on the side of the IR; not to help the GA but, in addition to helping Palleaon, to murder some moffs. She views the Jedi as
nothing but a blight on the galaxy & wants to lock them in a box. She cannot see the light of the Jedi at all. Palleaon could at least view the jedi in a
rational, objective & true way. I think he gave the best description of the Jedi I've ever read: part think tank, part special forces, part mystical
reassurance.

Depending on your view of war crimes, I would take the position that she was never truly a villain- unless you simply define villain as enemy of the heroes (or
the war crimes thing). She did what she felt was necessary to aid the war effort, and to avenge crimes commited against her and others in the past.

Likewise, she says that she has no use for Jedi, but she then aides the Jedi coalition by working with Niathal. Her character was definitely not complicated in the past - loony Imperial, murderer of Mon Calamari and war criminal etc. But, in my opinion the authors of LotF have added in some gray areas to Daala. I think they are trying to turn her into a pragmatist, like Zinnios said. If that character development continues in that direction, who knows what she may be in the future. It's even possible, although admittedly not likely, that she may accept the Jedi, much like Pellaeon finally did. Or, she may just decide to keep killing Moffs and hating Jedi. Either way, I have a feeling a lot of this was left ambiguous to provide future authors their choice of potential plot lines. As a side note: please, keep in mind that I am in no way saying that this is how I view Daala. To me, she is exactly how you described her and I think some of the characterizations of her in LotF haven't made much sense. I'm just trying to understand what I believe to be the portrait the authors are attempting to painting for us.
