Once Star Wars books started being pumped out in earnest (1994, as Zahn had one of the Thrawn books released in the three years preceeding and no other adult novels were published in that time frame), it took only two years for the first X-Wing book to be released.

What comes to the different reactions to the cancellation of BO and Traviss' departure, my view is that Cunningham was seen after DJ as working inside the existing universe, clearly inside it's limits and that BO was expected to be a classic, middle of the road SW novel which would hold no great surprises.
